Decided to drive my recently acquired 81 931 from NY to Arizona.

Day 1 - 500+ miles and no problems

Day 2 - lost the drive belt. Alternator was loose from it's mounting bracket, wiggled around and eventually shredded the belt. Replaced belt, tightened everthing up, and back on my way.

Day 3 - 700 miles with no problems

Day 4 - 750 miles to home...wish me luck!

More to come (hopefully nothing too exciting)

Sam

Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

Those durned alternator belts.

Only two kinds of 931, ones where the belt's come off and ones where the belts GONNA come off.

Watch those alternator bushings. They fail and make the alt pulley misalign with the plane on which the belt is riding. So keep an eye on that pulley as a tell-tale for the bushing problem.

Please let us know your progress and where you're planning on being in the next leg of your journey. Maybe someone here can help out if you get into trouble.

Nice ! Enjoy, these cars are such good GT cars.
This winter i'm taking my VW Passat for a 2000+ km trip and it already feels so weird just thinking that i'm going to be on a long trip and not in my 924.

Weird that you didnt see the alternator mounts going bad.
They should be pretty bad to fail like that.

Made it home last night. 2600+ miles, 1 broken alternator belt, 1 tired driver. The car worked great - every new 931 owner should go for a nice long shakedown run like this

+1, drove mine from Phoenix to Portland after buying sight unseen on EBay.

More proof that 931 owners all have a screw loose on some level!
