|
|
The battery tray was renewed previously but it's rusting again so before it collapses I figured I would remove the battery, fit it properly so the bonnet goes flush (ish) and then wire brush the rusted bits and prepare it for some anti rust paint.
I've finally found some place local that stocks POR15 so figured it would be time to try it.
Anyone else done this? _________________ Trust, Then Verify |

POR 15 is a brilliant product, there is however now a locally made facsimilie as well. Make sure you follow the directions well. Preparation is the key. Oh, and do wear disposable gloves.........that shit will NOT come off your hands.....no matter what solvent you use. Ask me how I know! _________________ 80/81 932/8 ROW |

if you fear it is going to collapse then you are going to have to really strength the area up. Also, if there is visible rust in the tray portion under the battery it is likely you have even more rust in the upper support member cavity. this is the piece with the 3 rubber plugs. if you are getting mysterious water puddles in your foot well it is likely from here. So the quick and dirty way to do this is to layer POR with fibreglass cloth or matt...this will strengthen it up. but like i said...you gotta pull out the rubber plugs and look in the support member cavity. I am still working on having a reproduction tray made up...but several months away. cutting and replacing is ultimately the best solution...but POR is a quick and dirty fix that will last a while or if you are not doing a concourse restoration.

In no way is it a concourse restoration. Bought it for $1000, total spend so far inc service items is $2900 inc the car, but I now have a reliable car which I can fit the kids in, something my two seater can't.
I know it's rusty underneath the battery from when I had to change the battery, so figured a bit of preventative maintenance would be an idea.
No puddles in the footwell so it can still be rescued. _________________ Trust, Then Verify |

Battery acid will "pickle" the metal, it must be neutralized (if any is present) before painting.
Acid is a large reason the trays rust out. |

My 928 had issues with paint being stripped by acid and then surface rust beginning.
I cleaned it to bare metal......masked the sides so onto the bottom 1 inch of the battery box sides plus the bottom were exposed.
I then lightly undercoated that lower part of the inside of the battery box. Let that dry fully in summer and painted the entire battery box the exterior colour of the car.
I have not had any issues since.
You could of course just use the POR15 on the lower part of the battery box and then paint the whole box the colour of the car. That would be a very clean finish. _________________ 1981 931 (Canadian car)

| Acid on the metal won't bother acid etch primers Because they work on that principal but enamels and epoxies won't stick like they should. The acid may continue to attack the metal under the paint. Just something to be aware of. |
