IF they are inserts then you should be able to unscrew the top and it should have a large nut at the top.
However the later 944 struts can be rebuilt by cutting the top off and drilling a mounting hole in the bottom of the housing to hold a special insert that is held in place with a bolt. _________________ Stefan

No those are NOT the early style shocks with the inserts. You can see the cap is crimped and there is no way to get it off without cutting it.
Here's the ones that I pulled the inserts out of and while I galled them pretty bad (they were really rusty) you can see the place a special wrench can get on them to remove them.
