HELP!!My 82 931 is stuck in third. While driving the other day I shifted(under medium heavy acceleration) into third and can now not get the shifter to move from third at all. Previously the gearbox had shown signs of sticking in fifth but always came out with a small amount of effort. Any help would be appreciated if there is a trick that doesn't include dropping the transmission which I am fast beginning to accept as the method Ill have to do. I have replaced the selector rod which improved shifting dramtically, The tranny shifts good with no grinding.
Thanks in advance for any ideas as I am making a battle plan for pulling the unit.

Odd, I guess I would start with a careful inspection of the linkage at the gearbox end and make sure nothing is bent, binding, etc. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I just spent a couple of bucks in the linkage on the 931. The box was ok but the linkage needed work. First gear seems to be a problem but a small one.
All in all the 79 931 runs fine. _________________ 77 1/2 track car

The 82 should have the Audi based box, correct? That's nearly the same exact box used in the 944 series (subtle gearing and other changes through the years). Along with the Audi 5000. Lots of them available from 944 breakers and on car-part.com (maybe you can find one with an LSD!)
The first thing to check after the linkage is to verify the amount of oil in the box (remove the fill plug with an 18mm allen wrench or socket and see if the fluid can be felt with your finger).
Swapping the boxes takes about 3-4 hours, so don't be scared. Make sure you've got a good jack, jackstands, a set of metric tools (breaker bar, sockets, wrenches and a torque wrench) and a triple square drive bit to remove the axles. An 18mm allen head socket wouldn't be a bad idea to take the drain and fill plugs out to change the fluid. Swepco 201 is recommended by many for the Audi 016, but as long as you follow the guidelines in the owners manual you'll be fine.

| Had to replace the transmission. Got a good one and now know what a really smooth shifting experience I have been missing. Have been taking the old unit apart but even with the unit in three pieces it still is frozen. Oh well. Thanks for everything. |
