Hey all, am going to install this quick release steering setup in the S car. Was wondering on those who have done this, do you butt weld it to the steering column? Or, do you sleeve it, as seen in this mock-up I've done. The only problem with the sleeve I have a available (handle for long sold bottle jack), is that it's a bit loose over both. There is an inside seem weld on the sleeve which I had to file down for fit, guess I could file a bit less! And, can crimp the ends with cuts as shown. Not sure if it will have a circular orbit, or an elliptical one!
I like the positioning of the wheel, closer to the body. The stock wheel interferes with my right knee.

Well, went with the sleeve method. I did though, drill two big holes on either side of the sleeve where it lined up with the two pieces. I was able to spot weld the two together there. Then, I did four more welds around the sleeve, and it's good to go. Pretty? Nope, then neither is the car~! Racecar. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

We sleeved ours too. Was a good fit on the hex hub we used, but unfortunately not as much on the steering shaft; pretty much inevitable thanks to the way the shaft is machined.
Best plan is to tack in place a few times and take plenty of time to ensure you have it straight. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Yeah, it's in a small orbit, but, you can hardly tell unless you look at the center of the wheel. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

I used small aluminum shims on the inside of the sleeve. They are still in there but they are so tight there is no worry on them coming out. The steering wheel hex attachment has a very minor "tilt" to it, but you would be extremely hard pressed to notice....i.e. a micrometer needed. _________________ Ian Edgerly
