What would it take to mount a 944 manual steering rack on a 924/931? Does anyone have some side by side pictures of the two racks? Are the mounting points in different places? How about the intermediate shaft, is it shorter? I don't mind fabricating things, just looking to see what I would be in for.

Thanks,
Britain

If memory serves, the crossmembers are slightly different where it bolts up. I can take a look when I have time later this evening (unless someone chimes in sooner). Are you specifically needing it for a reason or just not wanting to rebuild your rack and have a 944 rack available? Keep in mind the manual racks for the 944 is an NLA part, so finding parts for them is getting harder (and kits are definitely NLA).

944 and 924 manual racks have interchangeable internals, but different cases. Ideola had adapters for sale to attach 944 rail on a steel 924 crossmember but I didn't find them on the site for now. However you can contact him through this forum or his site (http://garage.ideola.com) for details.

Thanks for all the great info. Couple of questions?

What is the difference between the 924 and the 944 internals?

Are there rebuild kits for the 924 racks? If not, then the 944 racks being NLA is just a bad.

I am interested in the 015 sport rack to get a quicker ratio, are you saying that I can swap those parts into my 924/931 rack housing?

There is (or was) a 924 here with a perfectly good rack in the U-Pull it in Redmond, OR. Probably worth calling them as it would be easier than rebuilding your current rack if that's what it needs. I had pulled some parts of it. Black interior (perfect door cards), engine, transmission and torque tube still in it, engine bay was pretty clean looking. Suspension is still all there. Tail lights and headlight linkage and a lot of misc bits are still there.

Aside from that, I've never attempted swapping parts and would be potentially interested in hearing what the others say as well on swapping parts from rack to rack since that may be easier than hunting down an entire rack.

Not sure what you heard about the 924 rack not being durable, but we haven't found then to be a weak point. You are definitely better off swapping in a good used unit.

I will get mine apart shortly to determine what has failed in it.

If you decide that you want to swap for another 924 rack, let me know. I would be willing to check on the local parts car in the U Pull It here for ya. Gotta keep our fellow 924 brethren on the road! Since you're in Oregon, shipping wouldn't be too bad (unless you find yourself in the area or something and want to pick one up).

The power rack on my '87 924s was leaking when I bought the car. Both end seals were leaking into the boots so I didn't know it right away. (PO had even drained them before I saw the car)... Anyways, there is a rebuild kit available through Pelican parts, if I remember right, it was around $50. It took me about an hour to strip down and rebuild the rack (after removing it from the car and cleaning it) and for me wasn't that bad of a job. My guess is it should take between 1 and 3 hours if you have never done one before. Just take you time and lay everything out in front of you as you do it and make sure everything is cleaned when you put it back together.

I've got a spare 924 turbo rack you can have. Let me know and I'll see about dropping it by this week.
