Hello. My first post here as I'm only now looking to be a 924 owner. I was also looking at a 1983 944 but I guess thats a post for another board. Truth be told i am partial to the 924 body and as the 1987 924s I'm looking at seems to be a 944 in disguise it does seem to be the tempting one but the 1980 turbo seems to be one that a person could have a bit more fun in.

I'm looking for the car to pretty much be a daily driver, for me thats a short school run, couple shops runs in a week and maybe a few short pleasure blasts. All in, not too much at all

So, heres a breakdown:

1987 Porsche 924s. 5 speed. AC and all electrics work. Full history and its a very straight and clean, inside and out, car. Red with a black interior. asking 3,500.00. milage unknown but its at a dealer that has serviced it for a long time.

1980 Porsche 931. 2 tone black on bottom (might be a dark grey or whatever, pic isn't perfect) silver on top. Advertised as pristine, no interior pics. Has 4 bolt rims so I do believe that would mean rear drum brakes? Says low milage. asking 3,700.00

944 i looked at was silver, 5 speed 1983. 120,000 k's on it. Maintinance has always been done, some recent work like timing belt, water pump and a few things. asking 4,500.00

I thought with 944's going into 7,000.00 where i live it was worth looking at the one above but as I say I do like the 924 a little bit more.

So, If you were me, buying my first front engine Porsche, pretending they are all top shape cars quality wise, what model would you recommend I purchase as a new to the breed buyer looking for a daily runner?

I've scanned this site a few times and very soon I will be an active member. What a great place.

Thomas.

* * dons flame suit * *

Except for the hard core enthusiast, there are too many critical NLA parts to advise any two liter car, including a 931. Get the S.

* * awaits temperature increase * *

If you're looking for a project to play with and you're comfortable with CIS troubleshooting and repair as well as scrounging and fabricating a few parts/pieces then the 931 might be a good choice since they take well to modification and boost is addictive

The NLA parts are annoying and the group here does a good job of trying to do group buys or finding alternatives to the missing parts, but it would cause me to pause a second if it were my money.

The 924S is a better choice for a fun driver that is relatively easy to maintain. While the 2.5 doesn't seem as exciting to drive as the 2.0 turbo, it weighs the same and produces similar power (stock) with more reliability. The 924S will have better brakes out of the box so you won't have to swap them out and it will have power steering which is nice when you try and park the car someplace.

If you really want boost, then you could always look at swapping the 924S 2.5 for a 944 turbo drivetrain later: http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=36902

What they said. Parts availability can be rough, and the used market is small. All of these old cars have gotchas and the cost adds up quickly. I'd say find the best maintained and documented 2.5 you can.

I'll add my vote for the 2.5L as I own both like Rasta. After living in the machine shed for the last 4 months, getting know the innards of this car (924S), have to say, I'm pretty impressed. The expenses/work incurred resealing this engine is not for the timid. But, with Clark's Garage, Pelican Parts at my disposal, the overall experience was good. Even the mechanical myth of replacing the belts, was not that difficult. Just need to pick up a battery today, and I'll see if all that work and money will pay off!

The "s" and the 944 are basically the same. So the decision is down to looks (and condition) there.
The 2.0L takes dedication. Its not a bad car but its not suited to be an only car. Parts can be hard to find and it takes a fair amount of tools to do tests & repairs.

I own a 1980 turbo. Unless you have a lot of patience and a basket of money, buy the S.

I've owned both, buy an S. Women hate to drive a 931, and love to drive a 924S.

This seems like contradictory advice.

I feel like the 931 is more of an unpredictable car as to where the 2.5 is more stable.

Now the 951 on the other hand...

I don't agree with this. Same brakes & suspension. Steering is close. Sounds like the 931 had some worn parts.

Never driven a 931. Just basing my theories off of what I've heard. I own a 944

That's pretty unfair. I assumed you had by the "I feel" statement. Even your 944 is not much different. The 944 is a more refined, smoother car but the handling is similar. I have driven them all.
