|
|
| Well, I did almost a complete workup. Started out to just be a blown head gasket and fried alternator. I replaced every gasket I could get my hands on. My problem now is getting my crankshaft to TDC. The camshaft has the little dot to line up, but I do not see a notch or anything for the crankshaft. I have considered pulling plug #1 and doing the old pencil trick. Is this the easiest? I know my timing will be off, but i CERTAINLY don't want my compression off! Also, howwill I know if it is on the exhaust or compression stroke? I'm waiting on one more fuel line and I'll be set. This is the base '79 924 engine. Also, the timing marks are impossible to find! I looked for almost 20 minutes back during my diagnostic stage of this adventure. Where the heck is it? I usually adjust by ear, but it's WAY off. I'm reaching out to the guru knowledge base on here to get my toofah running for this weekend! Thanks!! |

The pulley on the front of the engine should have a mark on it that lines up with an indicator on the oil pump to indicate piston #1 at TDC. Failing this, you'll have to poke something down the spark plug hole unless you want to pull the head again in order to get things to line up.
There is no difference between exhaust or compression stroke to the crankshaft; that is determined by the cam shaft.
By timing marks, do you mean the marks on the flywheel? It is common for people to put the flywheel on in the incorrect orientation, so the timing marks mean nothing. The flywheel is not keyed, so this is easy for amateurs to do. Don't forget that there is valve timing and ignition timing; they are different.
The How-To section is intended for writing up procedures on how to do something, not for asking questions. This is more appropriate under the General Discussions part of the forum. _________________ 78 924 NA

| Thanks for the help. Sorry about the "How To" section. I was looking at is a a tell me how to do........ The ignition timing marks is what I was looking for. I know they are hard to see, and I've done it once, but that was over a year ago. |

I have a post in the "how to" section covering timing belt alignment - you might find this helpful. On my '82 924 there is a small notch in the forward part of crank pulley that you should mark with a color.
Anyway, my 4 step procedure should get the engine started. Good luck, Peter |

| Update... I could not see Tue notch so I used the pencil trick in #1. After it reached TDC, I looked again and saw a VERY small notch on the back pully. It was almost non existent. Got everything lined up, just waiting on the fuel line still. Hope this will help others out there. Thanks for all the input! Never met a bad Porsche owner! |

| I'm glad you found the timing mark - small "nick" that needs to be painted with bright nail polish (don't use her favorite color). So it appears that you have the crank-cam-and distributor aligned to #1. Good luck and keep us posted. |

Yes I just had the same experience last week, I was able to line up the cam then I had to lightly sand off a thin layer of garnish/rust to discover the tiny mark on the balancer /pulley. (PO mark was wrong)
There is also a third mark, a small window on the driver-side (left) of the bell-housing where you can see a knotch or step line up. I also marked where my dizzy lined up with the C-shape bracket /clamp, of course that would change if it's messed with. Maybe I'll edit here when I get around to uploading pics. |

| I got EVERYTHING lined up TDC, turned the key and everything sounds good, but no spark. I am getting fuel, battery is good, new coil and plugs, just not turning over. I ordered the Petronix 1847V electric distributor conversion today. There were only two grounds I undid. There were on the Intake. So, couldn't be a ground issue. |
