|
|
Replaced my starter moter last night.
About normal.....every 3-4 years.
On the motor it stated as not to void the warranty the heat shield MUST be re-installed.
My 924 never had one......have not seen one either.
Anyone ever fabricated one? If so...design? did it work?
With how close the starter motor is to the exhaust header it really needs one |

Made one out of a steel sheet on the n/a, the heat really is a pain for the starter. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

+1 to that.
Helps a lot to have the header ceramic-coated... also the Bosch SR10X starter (Audi starter) drops right in, works better.
Just made a shield to try and protect it better - been running without too long, and had to put one on too. There's a threaded bit on the engine mount it can bolt to. _________________ Vaughan Scott

cermaic exhaust coating on an N/A is a must, most stupid design ever on the N/A was to put the starter under the manifold. R.E.T.A.R.D.E.D
Killed my start twice and the alternator at the same time when the wiring shorted out.
even with heat reflective tape and loom protection it's going to come back and bite you...
do it once, and stop the vicious cycle.

So, anybody want to share what they did for a heat shield? What it looks like?
My starter lasted about 2 years before the solenoid died from heat (cracked plastic).
Sounds like the factory thought it would be a good idea, but I'm guessing either not all cars got them or it's a common thing for previous owners to toss. _________________ 78 924 NA

| Lazy people leave them off, they can be a pita for some. You can make a shield, cover the starter in heat reflective tape or wrap, or all of the above. |

With the manifold off I started with a piece of cereal box cardboard and just got something to bolt on and fit with some clearance from both. Then I built that out of a piece of sheet metal air duct. I had an old soldering heat shield cloth ( I think it is some NOMEX type of stuff) and pop riveted it to my shield. as an added insulator. _________________ Mike
