Anyone got a good read with pics about replacing the input and output bearings on a 4 speed manual?

I am fairly certain it's time to replace the input shaft bearings, it's not shot but you can hear noise on acceleration on 1st and 2nd and less on 3rd and 4th.

The FSM has the instructions and PET should have the part numbers for the service parts.

Of course ditching the 4-speed for the 5-speed isn't a hard swap and parts are a bit more readily available since they share more internally with the 944 units.

Does it sound like it's coming from one side or the other, down the middle? If the sound is more from left or right rear wheels, could be a carrier bearing going out.

Not to mention it could also be the Torque Tube bearings.

Keep the 4 speed, its faster and keeps the car original.Eyerything else is throwing money away....The early original cars are getting rare and prices do climb fast...

Well,.. It's really only sounding when I hit the gas on acceleration and moving. When I sit in the drive way with the clutch engaged with the car in neutral it doesn't do it, that kinda makes me think it might be a wheel bearing, but then again maybe it's the input shaft and only does it under load. It's really hard to hear. It sounds like a whirling sound.

Can I use this for the rear wheel bearings?

I'm thinking I am just going to replace everything,..

Bearings (inner and outer), all bushings for trailing arms and the CV axles.

How many bushings are there total?

So I crawled under the car and I grabbed the CV shafts. On the drivers side I can hear metal to metal clanging with I shake it vertical. When I twist I get the same thing. The passenger side not as much but a little is there. If these CV shafts are original on the car I'd say that's damn good engineering to last so long.

The Noises I get vary, I'm trying to figure out what is going on with the rear end. I think the whirling sound might be from drums needing to be turned/replaced. Sometimes I get a feeling the gear box maybe sloppy too, but after feeling the CV shafts I am going to start with those as they are prolly 40 years old and wouldn't hurt to replace them anyway. between all the possibilities it sounds like a jet engine reving up on acceleration, which normally would sound kinda cool, but obviously there is mechanical issues going on. So I'll start with what I see and hear and go from there. I got a feeling I'll need to replace everything eventually, but for now I start with these.

I posted a special tool for bearing race removal, but be honest,.. do I really need that thing? If I had a later 944 with a solid 2-3" bearing across the control arm I would say yes, but as anyone changed the rear bearings with hand tools?

Thanks for the help!
