Hi guys I'm just in the process of rebuilding an engine but need the rods from my original which is still in the car. Is there any way to wrangle the oil pan around enough to get at the rod nuts and get them off ?

If this isn't possible does anyone have a spare set of good rods I could buy for a reasonable price ? (I need them pretty quick as I'm off to work in another province for 6 weeks and want to get this mess to the engine builder so it done by the time I get back.)

Thanks,
Leigh

I would assume not because how would you disconnect them from the piston? I would think the crankshaft would stop the piston from coming out from the bottom. Pull the head.

Yes, I know they need to come out the top but can you actually access the rod nuts from the bottom in order to remove them and free the piston/rod assembly with pulling the block ?

You can definitely get a wrench on all rod bolts with the block in the car.

That's pretty much how it's done on most vehicles with oil pans

My inquiry was more about whether the oil pan can be removed with the block in-situ.

To remove the oil pan, you have to drop the front cross member. I don't think you'd be able to shoe-horn it out of the way due to the oil pickup. The cross member drops easily be removing the four nylock nuts, the bolt/nut at the lower end of the intermediate steering shaft, and the four big bolts at the rear of the A-arms, so not really that hard.

I have plenty of matched sets of used rods if you need them. Cheap too, but shipping to Canada perhaps not so cheap, given the weight.

Dan,.. dumb question,.. and I know I can just walk out to the garage ans see this for myself, but the engine mounts,.. they aren't sitting on the cross member are they? You can drop the pan w/o bracing the engine?

You may be thinking of the 2.5L which does sit on the cross member. The 2.0L is suspended off of brackets along the frame spars.
