What is the trick to removing the bearing in the ignitiion switch housing?
I've been beating on the bearing with a drift pin but I am conceend I might beak the housing so I stopped. Looks like the end it comes out of has been rolled over, do I have to grind it off. _________________ BFG

The older 924s have a bearing in top of the steering column that is replaceable and will cost you about $45.
The younger Steering Lock Housing (1981>) can be found at several places… for instance:

You'd have to bring your ignition lockcilinder over to the fresh housing so you want to read this…

I've read of Mk1 folks replacing the bearing themselves in the past,
but I have no DIY online reference to that (or remarks in English).
I haven't replaced mine yet, though I noticed the difference.

… one is older, I forgot which one… I'm guessing here! OLD <— vs —> YOUNG. CMIIW

Regards, Harm.
Edit01: Update.
Although there is a noticable difference between the bearings pictured above,
these both are suppossed to be considered YOUNG, if…
I don't think a 914 bearing would fit these two.
Q: Is the 914 bearing's outerdiameter larger?

The end the bearing comes out of has to be either broken or ground off.
Not ideal but unless you wont to replace the whole assembly there is no choice.
The 914 has a bearing to fit and is about $25. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

All who replied, thanks for the feedback.
I filed down the rolled over edge and was able to remove the bearing.
When there is a will there is a way.
I can't belive Porsche used platic as a mating surface.
I the nner part of the bearing is made of plastic and crumbled I guess because of old age and there was a lot of slop in the steering column.
Fixed, on to the next issue. _________________ BFG

Used the info provided by Harm to refresh my steering assembly today.
In my case the bearing had play and two of the three arms were broken.
I replaced the housing with one that had a good bearing inside and ofcourse all three arms intact. I also pressed some grease into the new bearing.
Now everything feels nice and tight.
Cheers Harm !
note1: to remove the housing from the steering column i had to use a press to take out the black plastic sleve that goes between the bearing and the steering wheel.
note2: My car is an 83 and the key barrel looks different from the ones you have in the pictures and from the one that was in my replacement housing. The original on my car has no plastic cover and has a steeper conical shape. I found out that this one was used in the 914.
