I believe the wire that connects from my dash switch to the heater valve broke or came off. I have tried to find the valve itself to open it since it has been a rough winter, but I can seem to get to the dang thing. Is there an easy way to get to it, and where exactly is it located. I've pulled the control switches out and it looks crazy. I'm not sure where exactly it came loose, but when I switch from cold to warm air, I don't hear the flap opening. I plan on some major restore work this year and a new sweet paint job, so little things first. Oh, this is my '79 toofah with the squirrel cage.

After 30 years the heater valve can get kind a crusty;
mine was slowly leaking cooling fluid from the top

Easy fix under the hood, next to the firewall,
down between the oil pressure sender and WUR,
…if you're able to reach underneath/behind there,
above the clutch housing.

Quick fix:
Either recutting the (~bicycle) cabel might do,
or refitting the lever on the heater valve.
Lubricate the wire.

Take a look into PET for location and assambly…

Heater valve. Standard VW part. $13.90. Listed in numerous catalogues for less than $20.
Note: late 82 and on uses 477 819 081. Difference not known to me.
