ok, so I'm over (kinda) losing my last 924 to a steel fence and back on the horse looking for the next one. I have my eye on a 1981 924 turbo in the papers for $6k. I just dont know how genuine it is so I have a few questions:

1. Do all turbos have the inlet built into the hood? this one doesn't...

2. I noticed multiple holes, between the bonnet and front bar - is this where the inter cooler fits - genuine?

$6k is more that I wanted to spend however I would fee more comfortable spending that amount knowing that I got a genuine factory turb

if it's aftermarket then there is no way I would hand over $6k

So all you people in the know, please let me know whether I should entertain the though or keep looking

BTW, im talking AUD

Cheers
Scott

I am sure some of our turbo owners will be able to give you some extra details, but yes all 924 turbos had the NACA duct on the bonnet.
The vents on the lower section of the nose panel between the headlights are for cooling, the stock turbo never had an intercooler. The carrera GT did but that was mounted over the rocker cover with a scoop on the bonnet. Hope this helps.

Yes, NACA duct on all turbos but the hood could have been changed. The nose of the turbo has four roughly rectangular vents a-x the front with little black plastic grilles in them. Usually 5-lug wheels but some 4-lug on early 79 cars. 5-speed. Green #/s and letters on the gauges. The actual turbo will be a kkk K26 and will have a little blue or red plate affixed to the side with some #'s on it -- IIRC stock will end in 4.10. Oil cooler in front of the radiator. No stock intercooler on the 924/931.

Post a pic of the engine compartment here and we can let you know if it looks stock, or not. Or, there are lots of pic on here in the 931 forum that you can do your own comparo.

Post a link to the car so we can have a look. It sounds dodgy if it doesn't have the original hood. There aren't many turbos left in Aus and most are crap (same for NA).

VIN won't lie. . .first two digits of an NA will be "92" while a turbo will be "93."

I take this back. All NAs I've seen look like crap but the few turbos I've seen tend to be in good nick -- they were expensive when new. A car like the one in the link would sell for between $10-$15k a few years back. Used car prices have softened a lot in Aus in the last few years.
