I got this 80 931 with a completely waisted turbo, fans shot, bearings shot, leaking inside and out and just a general mess... But it seemed to run pretty well despite eating all sorts of oil through the intake. I have the turbo off and it's toast, needs a complete replacement, I'm not sure how much of it is savable and am having all sorts of trouble finding good information as to wether or not I can reuse the housings that have been scuffed up by the fans or the fact that the hot one has a crack inside.. That info would be greatly appreciated if someone that knows would chime in but for now this is what I think I'm going to do because I just don have 1k to drop on a turbo that might go on a car that needs tuns more stuff so..
I have an idea to make the car drivable as is for just the cost of a few bolts and maybe gaskets... Od
To get a good idea of the general condition of the engine and whatnot else to see if it's worth putting all sorts of money into making it right
Gut the fans and shit out of the turbo
Somehow seal the shaft in between the intake and exhaust so it doesn't leak
Block the oil feed and return lines on the filter housing and oil pan to disable the turbo oiling circuit
And reassemble the turbo and the rest to complete the intake and exhaust circuits NA so it will run but with no boost at all, and be slow, probably about 100hp without the turbo because of the low compression ratio and see if it runs decent enough to warrant a thousand dollar turbo..
One concern I have is that by bypassing the turbo oiling circuit it could put more pressure on the other oiling circuits causing the pump to fail...
What do you guys think of this idea?
Stupidest thing you've ever heard right? Ha
And any advice as to how to figure what the best plan is to actually replace the turbo and point me in the right direction would be awesome.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Its a KKK turbo, search around here and abroad and you'll find rebuilders that can fix you up. That brand has been used in German cars for many years.
As for your idea, I think it would be easier to get a N/A exhaust manifold, slot the mounting holes and bolt it up.
Plugging the oil feed/drain ports won't impact the engine as it is functionally the same with/without a turbo as far as the oiling system works. Ultimately though, you'd be better off waiting to get the turbo back from the rebuilder's and fix the rest of the broken/questionable parts on the car (see the 931 resurrection thread for example) _________________ Stefan

Find a rebuildable turbo and have it rebuilt. The amount of fabrication required to implement 'gutted turbo' idea will cost you more. And, you get a car that will never run well in return for all that effort.
If you have mad fabrication skills - weld yourself an exhaust for a Garrett turbo from a Saab, they are a dime a dozen at a junk yard. The Saab engine displacement and air flow is not all that far off from 931, it could work ok. |

Do I have to find a 1980 turbo or will an 81- work?
944 or 924s2 turbo on my housing?
1980 is hard to find...

Check with Ideola, I think he has a used turbo or two. 350 for a used turbo that doesn't need rebuilding is a good price. Rebuildable cores are less. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

I believe any series 924 turbo will work. You need a turbo with the 3 bolt triangle pattern, which is different from the more common 4 bolt rectangle. _________________ 1982 931- Stock with MBC at 8psi

Yeah he seem to be an outstanding member...
Once I get my affairs in order I plan on contacting him and seeing if it would be a problem if I just drove down there to meet him and buy some stuff instead of having to have it shipped, prolly cheaper to drive anyway and would be an interesting experience _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Fasteddie, we're having an event at the garage on 26 Oct. Highly recommend you come down to meet a bunch of the other 924/944/928 enthusiasts here in Michigan if you can make it.
I have two turbos that are in pretty decent shape. I always recommend having them rebuilt first, but either of these could probably be bolted up and used, although I cannot vouch for the condition of the internal seals. Shaft play is minimal on each, and both appear to be in excellent condition:
