| I just got a copy of a Hayes manual curiosity from Ian on here. One question that doesn't get resolved in the book tho. Do I have to take the center nut out on the crank, or can I just take the 6 bolts that hold the puller on? |

Not sure of what you are saying here, but I just put ttiming belt on, took off alternator belt, and slipped belt over pulley and onto the cam and crank gear. Took a little fiddling to get it on crank and then I removed tensioner to get it on cam gear. Reinstalled rensioner and tightened per manual. _________________ 1978 924, aka The Red Rocker |

I tried slipping it past the crank pully but there it this bolt thing from the oil pump sticking down to low. there isn't enough clearance to squeeze the belt through without messing it up.
So again,.. do i need to take out just the hex bolts and/or the center bolt of the crank. Looks like to me I just need to remove the 6 outer bolts to get the pulley off. |

1- loose the tensioner roller, should be done already
2- at the bottom, put the belt on the crank gear
3- at the top, slide the belt on the can gear
4- tight the belt using the tensioner
5- have a beer _________________ 1976 924 N/A ROW SOLD

Can you post a pick of this mystery bolt? You should be able to just slip the belt right off after loosening the tensioner roller, after removing the alternator and water pump belt.
Glad you got the book
Cheers,

Again, it may take a bit of fiddling to get the belt on crank, but most assuredly, you do not have to remove that pulley. Have a beer and look at it again. _________________ 1978 924, aka The Red Rocker |

Here is the spot, it's tighter then a frogs ass. I even tried wiggling the belt between the teeth between this and it almost got stuck. I think this is some kinda drain plug for the oil pump or something. This is definitely some kinda mess up design that may have been addressed later with a slightly smaller pulley, this is a very early 924.
So again,.. do I take out bolt 1 and/or 3? I think 3 will be just the pulley.

bolt 3 will remove the pulley if you really have to. it is indeed the same pulley everyone else has and you can fit the timing belt between it and the oil pump. _________________ Riley

I dunno,.. I just mic'ed the two belts. The new one is a hair thinner, but I still don't think it will pass through. Anyone know what size inverted hex socket goes on bolt 3, I don't have this size.
by fit through, do you mean it's a PITA but it can be done or, slips easily? |

Maybe because it is a double V belt pulley(a/c?), although the single v belt pulley should still have the same alignment for the alternator V. _________________ 1984 n/a Ruby Red Metallic
