Hi, my in tank fuel pump wires are not connected, car still starts and runs.

I have the hot start issue but assume that is not related after reading a few other posts.

Can I reconnect these wires? How do I know if it is safe to do so, can I check the resistance value of the in tank pump, should I disassemble and clean and test first?

I rescues the car from a barn, been sitting since 1989. Will post some pics of the project soon.

Any help is really appreciated.

It's likely that the in tank fuel pump doesn't work or isn't there. There is a rubber hose inside the tank about 3/4 inch in diameter and an inch long that connects the pump to the plug that screws into the tank. I have found at least three of those pumps with the hose completely broken. With or without the inside pump being operational, fuel will flow around the break and be picked up by the external pump. The car will run fine without the internal pump working.

The hose connects the pump itself to the tank plug. Two wires also go from the tank plug to the pump to power the pump. The two electrical wires are a bit stiffer than normal so when you unscrew the plug, the pump will gently turn with the plug even though the hose has separated.
If you feel industrious, put some battery and ground onto the tank plug electrical connections and see if you can feel a pump vibration from inside the tank. If so, it probably is still good. You can then drain the tank, pull the whole assembly (tank plug and pump) out of the tank and check the hose. If it's broken, it is easy to replace with an appropriately sized piece of fuel hose and a couple hose clamps. Reinstall and you are back in business.
If you can't tell if the pump turns, then you probably don't need to bother with the inspection and fix. The car will run fine with the outside pump.
