Points? I didn't have points on my '77. What are you doing exactly? Just a tuneup? Having ignition issues?

sorry its a 924, had issues with starting (lumpy ruff idol) put file in between points. worked for awhile.

Changed points, now seems like points are too far apart (adavnced timing valve pinging)

Huh... I learned something new. Didn't know any of these cars had a points distributor. Although as with any points system, check the dwell then set the ignition timing and go from there.

Where are you at on the dwell at the moment?

Hi,

take the dizzy cap of, get a (i think) 22 open end wrench and turn at the crankshaft until you can see that the pointer opens as much as it couldt on one of the four (miss the english word) metall "fingers".
Now loosen the pointer and put a postcard (loosly, about 4mm) between pointer and "Finger".Retighten the pointer and your done.
Try to buy Bosch Pointers when available, the cheap ones burn a lot quicker and need sooner adjustment.
Think about installing a electronic ignition, doesnt cost much and runs all the time...

Or obtain a dwell meter and set them to 50 degrees.

Some early cars had points overseas. I think all US cars had transistorized ignition

Optimum performance is obtained when the dwell angle is 44 degrees.
Set the points with a feeler gauge @ .018", which will give you a dwell of 42. After driving for a couple hundred miles or so, the dwell will increase to 44 and stabilise. The timing will follow, as the point gap decreases, so if you set the points open a little further and the timing a few degrees retarded, it will advance as the points wear in.
Perfect gap is .016".

As was mentioned, consider installing an electronic ignition, which is as simple as replacing the points with a Hall generator setup, such as Pertronix.
If you do go that route, be careful to attach the two wires correctly, as reverse polarity burns out the unit immediately.
You only get one chance to screw up.
