Has anyone here used '86 Vanagon CV joints in their car ? Appearantly they are the same as early 944 units and for some reason they are about 1/4 the price.

Yes. VW Type 2 (Transporter, bus, etc.) used the same CV joints from 1968.
Jetta from 1988 1/2 used the same joint on the inboard end of the front drive axles.

If you buy Porsche-boxed parts, you will pay Porsche prices.
I once needed a fuel pressure regulator for my '83 944. I looked it up and found the same part for a Volvo 240 DL at roughly half the Porsche price.
Same Bosch number on the reg.

Is there a complete interchange list available for our cars?

Its insane that you can get two axle assemblies for $130 which is 4 CV's for a VW or you can buy 1 1/2 Porsche branded CV's for the same $130.....

Ah yes, but it is nice to drive a genuine Porsche and yet still be able to save money on parts.
