I need to take the bottom plate off the gas tank and clean the strainer. I checked with Sunset Porsche and of course the gaskets are NLA(it is a '77). Permatex makes a sealant called Motoseal that is gas resistant or I could get some rubber gasket material from McMaster-Carr. Has anyone been thru this? Suggestions for gasket material?

I have gasket material in bulk, and plan to cut one out for my leaky tank. I'll let you know if it works!

I would be interested to find out whether these bolts come out without shearing off, before I try mine

There are no bolts at the bottom of the tank. Just a big fitting for the hose. You might be referring to the bolts on the top?

The early tanks have a circular removeable plate on the bottom, which, presumably, covers a screen!

Yes, mine has a plate with 5 or 6 bolts to the bottom of the tank, supposedly it covers a filter screen. Bolt heads are maybe 8mm so probably 4 mm bolts. I got some Motoseal and will try to remove it gently today. Last thing I need is bolts broken off down there.

My 77 also had bolts on the bottom.

Removed the plate today. The gasket was in reusable condition so after cleaning the plate of some minor rust type debris with a wire brush, I reassembled with Motoseal on both sides of the gasket and on the bolts. There should be some very snug plastic(maybe nylon) washers on the bolts to get a seal. Mine had one with an oversize copper crush ring and one with nothing. It had appeared to be seeping. There is only a pickup tube inside the tank, no filter screen. This is a car without an internal pump and a right angle screen filter between the tank and pump. Now letting it sit overnight to cure.

Interesting, wonder why the plate then if no internal filter?
