The replacement compressor from Ken is in and works (a little noisy but it works), A/C is basically working but it is not nearly cold enough to be functional/useful.
Any ideas as to what to try next? _________________ PCA Licensed Club Racer & Driving Instructor Current P cars: 1981 931

I need more info.
How did you evacuate it?
How did you charge it and how did you determine how much you put in?
Is the condenser clean?
Is the evaporator clean?
If it was open to the atmosphere, did you replace the drier?
My 79 blew 42 degrees at 90 ambient after I changed to R134a. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!

Last year, I had the 937's A/C professionally serviced and updated to 134a (including a brand new compressor) by Munk's Motors, a shop I trust implicitly.
If the ambient air temp is over 80 degrees, it simply can't keep up with the heat. I think the big problem is that the windshield and the hatch glass both act as giant magnifying glasses. I've given up on A/C in these cars, and either sweat it out or avoid driving them when the temps are over 90 degrees. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I agree with Ideola. They were never very good including the one in my 87 911. I drive my 931 here in Florida without any problem. Zone out and enjoy the ride. _________________ 77 1/2 track car

If I can suggest...maybe try R-12A....it's a propane based A/C coolant....it has much the same performance properties as R-12....much larger molecules than R-134....so leaking through hoses does not happen. I think I've read R-12A is compatable with the oils in R-12 and R-134. R-12A does not eat the rubber seals so conversion is quick and painless. simply drain the old system of the coolant gas and install the new R-12A gas. I had the local Toyota dealership convert my Previa minivan to R-134 for well over $1,000 and it did not function well in any heat......then I switched to R-12A and there was noticable improvement.
Google it and do your own research......and don't take any of the facts above and 100 accurate.....it has been a while since I looked into R-12A.
Here's a thread that talks about it.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Only thing I can add is that it is VERY dry here in CO. I had an early dash 944 back in 1987 and the A/C worked great even @ 90 ambient. I am going to pursue A/C in this car, hopefully with luck.... _________________ PCA Licensed Club Racer & Driving Instructor Current P cars: 1981 931

The early 944 uses the same evaporator unit as the 79 and up 924. So if your 944 A/C worked fine there is no reason the 924 A/C shouldn't. The compressor is basically the same as well. (same manufacture and capacity)
If your 924 has the late heater then you have the same A/C as the early 944.
The only thing that may be lacking (if everything else is in good working order) is the condenser. I believe there was a different condenser used in the 1980 and newer 924's. The earlier cars had an aluminum condenser that was very efficient but the later cars had a copper one. This is the only part that differs enough between the 924 and early 944.
You could replace it with a universal parallel flow condenser to gain capacity--about 20%. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!

| you could have a clog in the system. the porsche receiver dryers like to spew their contents through the a/c system when they fail causing simliar problems that you describe. On my 911SC...the a/c tech I took the car to had to blow the system out with compressed air numerous times. Then replaced with a new receiver dryer. After the final blow out the car produced bone chilling a/c. You may also want ot reach out to the manufacturer of the "procooler" which is a precooler dryer set up made for Porsche a/c systems. While they are geared toward the 911 a/c system I am sure they can advise you on how to adapt to the 924. Also, they can help you convert the a/c lines to barrier hose so you can run R134 without it leaking out or constant recharges. |

Many new parts, incl used compressor from Ken, and a lot of shop labor, but my car's AC now operates as new. So cold that in 90 degrees I can turn it down and reduce fan to "1" and all is well. Nice and cool. Thanks all especially Ken for the hook up on parts.
One part had to come from Germany, the drier it think.
The shop had to pull the whole foot well/firewall area apart. The car had all kinds of bad mechanic / McGyver crap work. There was duct tape where parts had broken, disconnected cables with the heater sliders, etc.
My black on black car is cold inside, yeah! _________________ PCA Licensed Club Racer & Driving Instructor Current P cars: 1981 931
