Hey everyone
I checked some numbers earlier and it seemed as though my '79 should have 2 fuel pumps. However when I looked underneath the tank I only see 2 hoses, one pump, one silencer and the one fuel accumulator and no extra wires or large nut piece with wires coming out.
Am I looking in the correct place or is this a hidden/tucked in a corner part?
perhaps I looked at the numbers wrong--
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

My 79 only had one pump (external). I think some cars had an internal "lifter" pump, but eventually the cars moved to a single external pump as the pumps were replaced due to age. _________________ Stefan

Thanks Stefan
Mine is starting to get noisy - - I was going to try to find one of those Pierburg pumps if I can -
Thanks again

Early models had one pump and later models shifted to two.
IIRC the change was about '80 and there is confusion around this time during the changeover. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

All 931s had the internal and external setup.
I have a more affordable Walbro option ($109) to the Bosch and Pierburg on my website. I've successfully used this on two 931s and a 924.
Click this link and scroll down to the bottom of the tune-up section.

thanks everyone -
It has been confusing because the PET that I have - if I am reading it right shows #'s9249103158 -9249400051 with 2 pumps with the internal pump sitting inside of the bowl that hangs down. I could not see when I looked inside down from the sending unit either.
9249100001 - 9249103157 has one pump and visually looks like mine with no extra wires from the bottom of the tank.
if that makes any sense to anyone
Also - does one pump mean I have the additional filter inside the tank?
Dan that's a great price on the pump - do you know if it has the metal or plastic internals ? I think bosch has metal and pierburg had plastic - I do not know how much that matters in the end
Thanks again everyone

Sean, I have not been able to find any details on the GCL series of Walbro pumps. All I can find is that they are "made to OE specs", but I don't know if that means in terms of materials, or in terms of operating specs.
However, if you look on Pelican and other car forums, you will find plenty of evidence that the Walbro pumps have a great reputation and are a suitable replacement for the Bosch 044 (and others). _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

My '79 has 2 fuel pumps. The external pump is about as easy to spot as a turkey in a chicken farm. But the untrained eye does have to search to find the internal one.
Are you having fuel delivery issues? If so, I can tell you right off that almost any porsche 924, 931, or 944 external fuel pump will work just fine and dandy _________________ 1979 924 NA

Walbro is a supplier for many OEMs and are used as OEM replacements under license to various companies (much Fram or Purolator filters, Brembo brake rotors, etc.) _________________ Stefan

Hi Sean
Hey your 79 most likely has to fuel pumps (both of mine have two)the one you can't find screws into the outlet of the fuel tank has two wires going to it the hose goes to the main fuel pump It is just a low pressure pump to push fuel to the main pump on start up & keep pressure against the main pump prevents air pockets when they all go bad If your 79 is starting & running fine I wouldn’t worry about it. Just leave it & it does have a filter (screen) on it & it is not replaceable without a new pump The thing you refer to as "the thing hanging down" is the fuel pressure accumulator this is a holding tank that holds extra fuel until you need more delivered to the fuel distributor & injectors

Thanks -
I thought it would have 2 as well - however - when I checked the bottom of the tank where the PET shows the hose and wires should be - I have none.
I actually wondered if a previous owner may have removed it - I do not know why in the world you would do that (besides money). At some point I may consider adding one if need be.
The Walbro one that I bought from Dan looks great - It has all of the wire and hose connections nice and complete - and a really cool Ideola's garage sticker.
I will try to take a picture of the bottom of the tank area and post it - maybe I am looking right at it and not seeing it...
thanks very much

Reading through the thread, it seems obvious why you don't have dual pumps.
Non-turbo's had one pump.
Factory Turbo's had two pumps.
You have a Non-turbo car (with an aftermarket turbo kit) So therefore you should have a single pump.
Having removed that inspection plate on my car, I can say that it is a huge pain in the butt since that will cause you to bath in fuel. I didn't notice any extra wires or a filter in the tank on my car.
Either way, just replace the single pump with a new Walbro and get on with it. _________________ Stefan
