hello,

i have just bought an 80 s1 turbo LHD and i have spent the day trying to get it to run.

Initially the starter wouldn't work, replaced solenoid and thats all sorted. I checked the fuel pump with direct power and it worked.

BUT when i turned over the engine it has no spark.

i have tried putting direct power to + on coil and still no joy.

the other thing is that the dash pod has been mucked about with, someone has cut the wires to the tacho... not sure if that makes a difference

am i missing something really obvious?

Did you follow this guide?

http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=22724

First: Replace the cam belt and make sure the rotor is lined up properly and turning when the engine is cranking.

Make sure the electronic "safety interlocks" are working or have been bypassed to allow the ignition box to operate the coil properly.

Check the ground connections in the engine compartment (for the coil and the ignition box behind the headlight)

You should have a multi-meter to test the coil resistance and ensure the plug wires, plugs, cap and rotor are in good shape.

The cut wires to the tach could be causing an issue and should be resolved. While you're at it, check the grounds behind the fuse panel, the connectors on the back of the fuse panel and the fuse holders.

From there you may have a bad coil, ignition box or just a bad chunk of wiring. Hard to say with some baselining performed on the electrical system.

thanks for the link guys, thats a great write up.

I have still got an issue.

When ignition is on, i have 4 volts at the coil when cranking it rises to 6. I have a full 12 at terminal 15 on the ignition module though.

this is really confusing me.

Isn't there a resistor attached to the coil? If so, perhaps that's failed?

Try jumping 12 volts to the coil from the battery and try again. If that solves it, then you know that something isn't right.

Time to start removing connectors, cleaning them and reconnecting them. Use Vaseline or dielectric grease to protect the connections, especially the ground connections (braided line and typically anything brown)

i am not sure about a resistor but i have tried taking a feed direct from battery to coil (tried 2 coils). Still no sparks?
