So I bought a MOMO wheel with a hub at a swap meet and although I knew it was a watercooled vw spline size on the hub I didn't know if it was the mk1 or the later ones. It turned out to be the larger, later spline size but I knew there were spline converters for the mk2's. The Mk2 vw's used the mk1 steering system but upgraded pretty much the rest of the car, including the steering wheel size. So their solution was to put a spline converter on the steering column like this:

Now I originally wanted to put the spline converter, hub, and wheel on my VW, but now i really want to put in on my 924 (background car in first pic). So the splines are the same, but the only difference I see is this plastic covering on the column where my adapter is supposed to slide onto.

By the way i'm using my parts car column for these examples because it's accessible and it's not the end of the world if I mess it up. So is it as easy as just cutting the plastic back, what exactly is its purpose?
Thanks,
Alex

Its purpose is to stop forward and backward motion of the steering shaft.
Remove it and cut it down
