Does anybody know what colour the iron block was painted at the factory? _________________ Nigel Walker |

None of my blocks have ever come painted.
On a related question, it would be interesting to know if the factory used any sort of corrosion preventive on the iron blocks. Once cleaned, they begin to rust very quickly on the bench (in my experience), but most of the ones I've pulled out had very little rust or corrosion. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

well they are not quite Iron...they are a high carbon content alloy...so the rust is just surface rust..it takes quite some enviroment to rust those things badly. If oiled a bit and not rained on they will last forever. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

The machined surfaces will rust very quickly, and can get pitted if not properly protected (I usually use assembly lube for long periods of storage). _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I read Porsche motorsport would leave bare blocks outside in all elements and occaissionally technicians would pee on them. Apparently to 'condition' them ready for abuse in their cars!! And no, its not 1st April!!
My block is being redone by my engine shop. I know for a fact he can't remember whether he's painting it black or red. It's gonna be a lottery what I'll get back _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Bright/Light colors are lot better for quickly identifying any oil leaks... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

That's because they have a built-in feature that continuously soaks the block with a fresh film of engine oil. _________________ Toofah King Bad

This is standard procedure for engine block castings. After they've sat outside for a bit, they're inspected for cracks which are caused by casting flaws, which are far more evident with a little bit of rust outlining them.
Perhaps nowadays more fancy technology is used to the same end, but this is/was hardly unique to Porsche. _________________ 78 924 NA

Thanks for all the responses guys.
I'm going to have to be careful when I start dismantling the engine.
