I'm new to this so I hope I'm doing this right. I have 1977.5 924 that po installed 5 lug and 5 speed from 1981 turbo. The back off tranny is only 1/16 from gas tank. Is this right? Or did he do something wrong

Turbo gearbox, isn't that always the "snail-tranny"?

Anyway, what you describe, is exactly the same as I experienced when I replaced the 4 speed, with a 5 speed 016 Audi gearbox on my 1976 car. There was close to no clearance between the gearbox and fuel tank.

I suspected that the gearbox would touch the tank now and then and cause a noise. So I took the gearbox off again and hammered a dent in the fuel tank, with a rod and a hammer. The rod was round in one end, so it didn't puncture the tank.

Did it 6 years ago, the tank is still not leaking, and nothing inside the tank (maybe rust) has come loose and clogged the fuel filter.

Anyway, the PO of your car has installed the gearbox correct. If you don't hear the gearbox banging against the fuel tank, don't do anything about it.

Yep, no worries. Bit of a pain when you go to pull the trans, but otherwise, no issue.
