| OK, got my other repairs done. Now the worst from what I hear. The sloppy shifter is definitely in the rear bushings. I can barely shake the shift rod with my fingers and hear it. Is there ANY way to get to this thing without having my mechanic drop the tranny? Also, I see bushings made of brass and some made of the delrin polymer. Which is better. Lastly, should I just replace the whole shift mechanism with a short shifter and have the whole thing redone? |

You can do it without dropping the transaxle, but it is easier if you can get it loosened to get a little more room to work.
I added to a write-up on the subject elsewhere in this How-To section.
You basically need a 13mm ratcheting box wrench, small hands and patience to loosen the cone bolt on the knuckle. Then you gently tap the knuckle off the end of the transaxle towards the front of the car. Disconnect the linkage at the shifter in the car and guide the rod out with the knuckle. Press pin out of the end of the rod to free the knuckle, replace the bushings (the stock ones are installed from the inside of the knuckle) and finally put it all back together in reverse order. _________________ Stefan
