How would you do the break-in? 1000km with variable rpm's and then oil change? Or what? New main bearings, conrod bearings, piston rings, rebuilt head, etc. Stock 2.5 163hp engine. _________________ Mikko

Put in some cheap oil, let it run until warmed up (15-20 minutes) then drain the oil, change the filter and put it new oil.
Don't drive 1000km with all the debris from the build flowing in the engine.
And you can be as clean and careful as you want, there is still dust and debris in the newly built engine so an oil change is elementary. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Will do that, thanks.
Edit: But how about maintenance after that? Should I drive lets say 500km and then do another oil change and from there on go with normal maintenance schedule? _________________ Mikko

I usually drive ~500-1000 km after the post-startup oil change and then change oil again and inspect the oil filter contents.
After that regular maintenance (5000 km oil change intervals on turbocharged cars which is ~1 summer season mileage for me). _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

The way Raceboy handles break-in oil changes is the best, aldough 5000km is a bit too soon if you dont race the car and you use good oil.
I do the same but i change at 7-8000Km intervals and i use Motul competition oil.
I think many people fail to understand the importance of a good oil and thats why engines wear and fail sooner than they should.
Additionally, the first driven 1000 Km, use the engine brake as much as possible. |

At the risk of starting a food fight, you might want to consider a single-weight non detergent or purpose-formulated break-in oil for that initial start and first few minutes, then a dino oil for that first 500mi/1000km. I've used a straight 30W in the past. Reason behind this comment is that synthetics are way too slippery for break-in and you don't get that initial "let's get married" wear pattern you want in the parts in a brand-new engine. Leads to oil use later or other ills (just ask VW).
Follow your engine-builder's advice though. There will be lots of voodoo, old wives tales and uninformed opinions on this topic. |
