| Hey guys, has anybody replaced a faulty water pump? how difficult a job is it? I had a mechanic look at it, and he estimated it as about an 8 hour job (yikes!) I've looked at how to do in in the haynes repair manual, doesn't look THAT difficult... any help would be appreciated! |

If he has never done one and does not have the correct tools, it will take 8 hours especially if he breaks one on more of the water pump bolts. All 4 belts need to be removed. All rollers, and at least 2 of the 4 belts (balance shaft and timing belts) should be replaced. If he has never done one of these, you most likely will have issues.

You don't want to have someone learn how to change the waterpump, timing belt, and balance shaft belt on your car.
These items are part of what is called the FOES (front of engine service), which includes the timing belt, balance shaft belt, bearing equipped pulleys, front of engine oil seals, and the waterpump. It's is critical that all of the items on the list be replaced on schedule for your engine to remain healthy and undamaged.
If a mechanic does not know about FOES for a 944/924S type engine, he is not going to have the specialty tools necessary to perform the procedure/s that are part of FOES. |
