The round thing in the air intake snorkel that goes up and down by the fuel injection distributor, not the one mechanically connected to the gas pedal. Anyway the car started running very rough after I had idled for a couple minutes waiting for a train to pass. Low on power, obvious miss. Went away the next time I started it, but came back after it warmed up.

Because it was easy and I remember reading you could get a rough idle if it was oily I pulled the snorkel and took a look. It appeared to be centered and moving as it should, a little greasy/oily but no big drops or runs of oil on it.

But since I was in there I took some spray can brake cleaner and wiped it down well. The car now seems to be running like a champ without even the slight, occasional miss or stumble that I had before the above described problem started.

Could it be that easy?

Or maybe you fixed a vacuum leak...

I had plenty of vacuum leaks when I got the car, it still ran better then than with the miss the recently developed. I am not real sure of how well the ignition and injection are working, but I am pretty sure I have the vacuum leak thing addressed. I have replaced most of the plumbing with new hose, tightened a lot of clamps, and even hooked a few disconnected lines back up.

My question, maybe not clearly stated, was for those with more experience with the cars than I, was how badly will an oilyou air flow sensor plate make the car run. It was more than a little stumble, more like hardly enough power to accelerate and worrying about whether I would get home.

I suspect it is an intermittent issue with the injection or ignition and it will return. Buy maybe I am a pessimist.

I ordered new plug wires because a couple seemed to have stretched a little at the connection to the silver plug cover when I tried to pull them. I have replaced the o2 sensor and cleaned up all engine grounds, but should probably go through the CIS diagnostics procedure I have read about here on the forum.

I am sure the car has sat for periods of time in its life, and one thought is sediment or blockage somewhere in the fuel system. I have had that cause intermittent problems like this on other old cars. Fuel pressure pushes crap in the system to a point in the system where it builds up, eventually slowing or even stopping the flow of fuel, cars sits, pressure behind the clog releases and all is fine again for a short while. Then again I have had electrical faults exhibit the same behavior. But most of my experience is with pre-emissions era cars that have a lot fewer potential fail points.

Well the plate itself doesn't really matter much unless it was so caked with crud that it altered its weight and/or shape drastically..

But the arms/linkage that that air plate is attached to pushes on a mechanical valve.

If in that linkage any of the axles, bushings, fulcrums, what have you get dirty to where it effects there ability to move freely or causes them to have much more than spec friction to move then yes this could very well cause all sorts of symptoms you describe..

Thank you, I didn't take the plate off when I sprayed it, but I am sure some brake cleaner ran down into the mechanism

If you separate the 2 halves of the air metering housing, by taking all the bolts out around its outside, you can really get in there and clean it good..

If I was to clean it with brake clean I would probably spray it with WD40 afterwards to prevent rust..
