just traded a motorcycle for a 1981 924 turbo, the car runs but needs a new starter, a battery and needs a turbo gasket replaced, he had the gasket but had not put it in. the gasket looks kinda triangle shaped.

my question is what is the best way to get to the turbo on this car, would taking the front end off be the best bet, or working from underneath or going in through the top? i have never worked with a Porsche before but it doesn't sound like too hard of a job for me.

and once i get to the turbo where exactly does that gasket go? i believe it may be the gasket from turbo to exhaust. which repair manual would work best for this car, i have always used Haynes on other cars.

Yes, it is a bitch, but certainly do-able if you are determined.

You should get your hands on a factory service manual and follow the procedures. Download the parts catalog and examine the exploded diagrams of the turbo closely. Also be prepared to spend a bunch of money on new gaskets and fasteners, and if you have the unit in your hand you would be foolish not to send it off for a rebuild.

IIRC, basic procedure is:

Underneath: Remove exhaust, remove headpipe, remove wastegate, remove j-pipe, remove oil cooler lines, remove turbo drain and oil feed lines, remove oil filter console, loosen bypass valve elbow clamp, remove turbo to manifold nuts, remove turbo bracket to turbo allen nuts, remove turbo bracket to block bolts.

Up top: remove air box, remove clamps from bellows that runs from air meter to turbo, remove air meter mounting nuts, move air meter out of the way, remove bolt that holds lower charge tube to block, remove charge tube.

Back under: remove turbo and bracket as a unit. Useful to move steering rack out of the way? Can't remember. . .it has been a few years.

Good luck.
