Hey guys, I just got my first car, a 1987 porsche 924s that has about 94,000 miles on it. when i shift gears, it makes a light clunking sort of noise. can anybody share some insight on what this may be? could it just be normal noises of the car? I am used to driving my parent's automatic minivan.. so could i just not be used to the car yet?

Put the car in gear(2nd or 3rd) and rock it backwards and forwards to see if noise location is identifiable. Could be breaking up clutch centre plate or worn drive shaft couplings. (or loose wheel nuts!)

Are either of those thigs crazy exspensive to fix? I also have a new radiator that needs to be put in, should i have my mechanic listen to the sound and put the radiator in too? this is my first car, i'm 17, and i absolutely love my car, but i don't have a ton of money to put into it. the car shifts and drives fine, but i wouldn't want to cause any further damage..?

If it is a clutch it IS expensive, if driveshafts, less so and not difficult to do yourself. If you own an old car, be prepared to do home mechanics, many workshops don't know or want to know older cars.

Park the car on level ground and put it in 3rd gear. Hop out and rock the car forward/backward. If you hear a knocking or clunking from somewhere near the back of the motor, then your clutch is done. What you're hearing is the limp tabs engaging each other. Do you have a lot of lash coming off acceleration? You can drop the starter and see if rubber chuinks come out the hole, too.

Clutch parts are anywhere from $500 to $1000 depending on which route you take. Figure 3 days to change it out. It's a big job but doable. Having a buddy to help is a good idea. Shops will charge an exorbitant amount of money to do this. If you can do it yourself, more power to you and it'll be good for at least 10 years.

Okay, and thank you for the response. I'll have to check that when I get back tomorrow! I've also noticed that it makes the noise when i depress the accelerator..? and not sure what you mean by lash, but yes it makes the sound when i accelerate too, sometimes, and mostly when i'm not smooth while shifting (still getting used to driving manual!)

Lash is basically freeplay. In the case of your clutch, the disc has springs on it to cushion the twisting force the engine puts on the driveshaft. When the springs break the twisting literally causes tabs on the disc to hit each other so you can limp the car home if the clutch disc fails. The car should respond smoothly to throttle inputs, not buck or lurch - any banging or sense of banging isn't right. (Prepare for off-color humor to begin!)

Okay, sorry for the late response, I've been pretty busy with other stuff. I just went out and put it in 3rd gear, and rocked it back and forth. There is a slight knocking noise, but I could barely hear it over the crickets outside. What do I do IF I need the clutch replaced? Literally I know absolutely nothing about cars. All I want to do is learn about my car, but everything is so intimidating, and I don't know where to start! I would be more than willing to do home repairs and mechanics myself, but I don't know the names of things or where to begin learning? How long do I have before it absolutely needs to be replaced? Where can I learn where things are located on my car, and what they do? I don't have a ton of money, but I could save up for parts. But I would not know where to begin replacing the clutch and how to start... I don't want to keep driving it around if it's going to make the clutch wear out faster or make things worse either. Where would I find a way to do this?? and how can I learn more about my car, what parts do what and so forth? I am 17, so I have some free time on my hands, so I feel like I could fix things on my own as soon as I learn how and what's broken.. But I'm absolutely in love with the car..
