Planning on removing the automatic transmission from a 82 924. I have done several 944 5 speed engine and transmission removals.
Is there anything I need to do differently to get the engine and automatic trans pulled? I suspect the trans has the same torque tube splined coupling? No clutch on the engine so will the motor just pull free from the torque tube spline or are there some other complications there. Sounds like the shift lever cable and a throttle kick down cable run down the torque tube and would need to be disconnected at the trans.
Found this diagram Is the flex plate locked to the Torque tube shaft spline in the front (item22) ? Also see item 25 and 26 at FT of flex plate. It looks like a nut and or c clip, is that locking to the TT shaft?
At the trans I see the 3 bolts mentioned in some other forums . Also looks like the compression clamp item 3 is locking to the torque tube shaft similar to how the 5 speed uses the splined coupling?

That last image looked like a 944 PET



I would be removing all the automatic Trans parts parts selling it off as a assembly or in parts.

Trans end:
I was able to zoom in and see the rear coupling and it looks like removing the spline clamp will let the trans slide off the spline.

This is the plan for engine end
1) Remove lower bellhousing cover and starter.
2) Remove the flex plate screws from the flywheel.
3) The bellhousing would stay with torque tube
4) Remove bellhousing bolts from engine .
5) Pull engine
6) Remove the circlip from flex plate, securing it to torque tube shaft
7) Remove the clamping screw at flex plate to Spline then pull flex plate.
At that point I could remove bellhousing from Torque tube.

I think thats confirmed based on what I found below.

Step #2 is done through the hole left by the removal of the starter.

If you remove the exhaust system from the collector back and the rear suspension, you can lower the bell housing, tube, and tranny as an assembly after step 4. (support the motor).

If you are parting the car, you could also remove the front suspension in addition to the exhaust and rear suspension and then lower the whole drive train in one piece. Much easier.

I removed my auto Trans and motor and found that the damper wouldn't come of the spline on the torque tube very easy. So I found easiest way to remove auto was to undo the three bolts holding the drive plate to torque converter at the rear, then undo the rear bell housing bolts, support the torque tube and drop out the complete rear suspension assembly and tranny and then dismantle on the ground.

At the engine end it was easiest to undo the six (I think) bolts holding the damper onto the engine and then the front bell housing bolts and pull the motor.

This leaves you with the engine (less bell housing but with flywheel at one end, tranny at the other and the torque tube in the car - too remove the torque tube you need to undo a couple of cross braces but that's pretty easy.

I found removing the Auto box and engine much easier than doing a manual gearbox.
