Hi all... it seems my fog-lights are acting bonkers.

They won't turn off... even with the keys not in the ignition.
They often don't work at all... and I think... are the cause of a slight current drain on my battery.

Could it be the relay?

Another thing... and this might seem really stupid.. lol.. there's no fog-light on/off switch located at in my car. I'm convinced the indicator/full beam control leaver activates the fogs.

I've had a long week (only tues), so it might even be plain stupidity.. but there's def something wrong with all of this...

fyi I took the fog-lights out... cleansed the connections and fitted again... when they shine, they shine like the sun... but they don't turn off.. and I don't seem to have control of them

Thanks for your help/laughs in advance...

Michael

Driving lights are activated (in my 82) by clicking the headlight switch into it's first position... second being when the lights flip up...

The main mystery facing me right now, is HOW on earth does one controll the Fog lights... without a fog-light switch... are they in deed activated when driving light is on and full-beam leaver is pulled?

cmon... so many views of the topic, so little response...

On my UK 83 the bumper mounted lights work like this:
light switch to position 1. Side lights on.
switch in position 2. Headlights pop up and light, side lights in bumper on.
Pull the main/dip lever, headlights go to beam (blue light in fuel/temp guage lights)
The front driving/fog lights are controled by a switch in front of the ashtray, next to headlight wash on mine, If the switch is on the driving lights come on with the beams and a blue light on the binicle comes on. If the switch is off the driving lights do not work period, I leave mine 'on' so I have a flash option when the headlights are off.
Couple of sugestions, take the ash tray out and see if you have the wires for the switch, a PO may have removed the switch and joined the wires, or on US cars it may be a legal reuirement to have a flash function? in which case no switch so you cant turn it off.
Dont know if this helps, but if you assume the bumper lights are driving lights not fogs it makes more sense. Take it you have the switch on the console for the rear fogs?

Hey Spliffy... thanks for that bud.

Ok.. No.. I don't have an extra switch to control rear lights...
and No, there's not switch for the fogies near the ashtray... BUT... I will investigate to see if wires are there and if so, I will obviously add a switch in there...

cheers for the feedback... will keep you posted.

Wonder if rear fogs were an extra in SA then, just out of interest what do you have to the left of the lighter just below the oil guage? thats where the rear fog switch is on mine. Do you have a blanking plate or did they make some consoles without the cut out?

Empty switch/spacer... guessing that's where the switch should go...
bottom line is... there's a drain... and I'm beginning to wonder, if the relay is bust... and im thinking that my radio has been wired in behind that relay to gain it's power feed... and my radio is not working... hmmm

Reccon I'm going to have a scratch around down there... never had this prob before.. I'm just stumped as to how on earth the fogs go on... the pos is that they have been wired in with the full-beam lever... I hate dodgey stuff like that...

Can take her in to see my auto electrician on fri... but was hoping to save the bucks and find the prob myself.

my money is on relay being pooped

Does anyone know what else the fog relay does?
I thought it was the 3rd one in top row... right next to the fuel pump relay.. Seems like someone labled them... this particular one reads warning light... but I have another one that's labled Hazard lights... wtf?

Guess I need to pull them one by one..

Tadaaaaaa!

ok... so my Auto electrician found an old 'hands-free' telephone unit stashed somewhere in the dash... REMOVED - get outa here... bye!

He also changed 2 relays... one of which was the FOG-LIGHT Relay... I knew it was that... anyway, he banged in two new ones... (not sure what the other one was for) AND now... I have no more battery drain... and my FOG lights work again... HOW?

When I pull my full-beam lever back, it activates the fogs. When I release it, it shuts them down.

I'm able to FLASH them when my MAIN LIGHTS are DOWN, but they will not stay on, unless I keep my beam-leaver pulled back.. (no option to keep it in place with main lights down)

I reccon I'll get a switch added one of these days, so that I can keep them on permanent, without having the main lights up.

Set me back 550 RAND - about 50 Euros shweeeet

Thanks for ppl's input.

Mickey

Yup, that sounds normal: The flash/signal option.

Das ist Verboten:
There would be no need for fog lights when you're not having your main lights up…
You'd be blinding other participants in traffic, that's why.

Once your main lights pop-up the fog lights should come/stay on using that same handle.
And that is all there is to it.
HTH
Kind regards, Harm.

Glad you got it sorted mate Like Harm says they should only stay on when the headlights are up and on beam.

Hey Harm and Spiffy... totally hear what you're saying and makes perfect sense. - Thanks for input.

I hate it when ppl drive with their fogs on and it's not foggy... it just threw me a bit, as the blown relay over-rode the normal function.

Cheers to you's and have a nice weekend!

Mick
