Car: 1980 NA 924 with about 60K miles
condition: excellent expect for sitting 6 years. It would turn over but no fire.... no gas.
So far:
Replace tank pump. The old one was very deteriorated and would not turn at all when bench tested.
Replace accumulator...it appeared to be leaking...so I did.
Replaced high pressure pump... again, bench testing showed it to be dead.
All that new stuff, I decided to disconnect the fuel line before the (also new) fuel filter and use a fused switch to manually cross the 15 and 87 fuel pump relay pins. Worked slick. I got about a cup and a half of beer colored gasoline and light sediment out of the line befpre it began running clear.
I pulled the jumpers and stuck in the fuel pump relay and stuck the key in. In about 2 dozen tries, the fuel pump "primed" perhaps twice. I orded a replacement fuel pump relay and installed it. The old one looked pretty good. I pulled off the cover and no burn marks or any other discoloration. Yes, I know that the components could be toast but the general appearance was ordinary.
I stuck the key in and now get nothing at all.
I know the pumps push like crazy. I have already cleaned all the grounds that I can find (under the dash, at the hatch and in the engine compartment) and reinstalled them dielectric grease.
What am I missing?
Thanks!

Had this problem before. Check the voltage from the dizzy. Also from coil to the ignition module. If there is no pulse (voltage) in any of theses areas the fuel pump will not activate. In my case the dizzy was bad, along with the wire going from the coil to the ignition module. I forget the exact procedure, but it is listed in the FSM. I am not talking about the jumper pins. There is a pin that when it receives pulse it activates the relay. The voltage on the jumper pin remains constant and does not "activate" the relay. _________________ 1982 Porsche N/A |

Thanks for the detailed information. I went back to the garage and started looking at all my connections but couldn't find any surprises except for a loose vacuum hose.
I got my daughter to help me check for spark with an inductive timing light and as I was cranking it, it fired!
I tried a few more times but could not get it to actually run although it was firing. I had lunch then went out to try again and this time it started under full throttle but running on one cylinder .. then as it warmed a bit another kicked in then all four. After 5 minutes, it had a stable idle. I took it for a spin around the block. It was the first time this old girl had moved under her own power for 6 years.
I think my problem was that I did not know how long it would take to "charge" the fuel filter and fuel distributor. In the interest of not overheating the starter, I was probably not letting the fuel pump run long enough.
Time for a proper cleaning, brake bleed and an alignment. A couple of miles on the freeway should make this fix permanent.

Be sure that you check the accumulator for any signs of leaking if it sat that long. If you start to smell gas from the back, you might see if it is leaking. I've heard bad stories of the diaphrams going bad when they sit forever. I got lucky with mine on my 77' but the wife's car had one go out on me and it made cold starts a pain. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)
