|
Hey guys I am getting ready to take my block into the machine shop to get it bored out for the new custom pistons I just got from Dan (Ideola's garage). My question is what do I need to ask/make sure is done on my block. So far my list includes:
-Jet clean
-Bore
-Torque plate honing
-Deck the block
What else do I need to ask to be done? _________________ Porsche 924 1977 N/A

Remove the oil galley plugs and clean gallery, replace plugs with new.
Replace all frost plugs in the block. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

- line-hone the mains
- finish hone the cylinders after boring specifically to your pistons. Take him the pistons and the spec sheet.
- complete internal balancing. Take him the entire rotating & reciprocating assembly from the front pulley to the rear pressure plate, and everything that connects to them. V-belt pulley, gilmer pulley, crank, rods, pistons, flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, wrist pins, rings, main & rod bearings.
The items that rotate (pulleys, flywheel, crank, etc.) should be balanced individually on a rotating machine (like you do with a wheel & tire). The items that reciprocate (rod-piston assembly) should be weight matched. The slugs should all be weight matched individually to each other (they should be pretty darn close if not perfect already). Then the same for the rods. Then you should have him put the rods, bearings, wrist pins, and pistons in groups and have each set of piston-rod components weight matched into specific sets and number per cylinder so you know how to assemble them. Each set of components should be within fractions of a gram of the others.
You could also ask him to chamfer all of the oil & water galley ports, but this is something you can do yourself as well.
Lighten & shot-peen the rods? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
