We've got another rally this weekend - the two day Targa Bambina around the Waikato/Coromandel areas. About 250kms of closed special stages and lots of touring in between.
Bron is doing it again in her Peugeot too, and we're both out to raise awareness for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Info on both cars is here www.race4-dcup.co.nz and reports will follow on the site next week. It's a massive challenge to get two old cars to the finish, and an even bigger challenge for Bron after everything she's been through (this week also marks the 2 year anniversary of finding the tumor and she's still going strong!). Early detection is critical, so you can all tell your partners that Andrew and Bron say you have to check them regularly
Results for each stage will be posted here http://targa.trackit.co.nz/
I'm #125 and Bron is #139, and we're both in the classic 2wd class. _________________ Andrew

Good luck!!!,
I can't tell you how much i want to do the 3 targa's... one day...
I was supposed to be looking for a cheap rally car when i found my 924. If i find another, (at the right price) guess what will become of it?? _________________ 1982 924 N/A 5sp (UK import)

It's certainly a lot of fun. You'll have to come up and help our service crew for one of the events some time too. _________________ Andrew

Almost ready now but the924 isn't running properly now, so it's booked into the rotary specialist tomorrow as I'm running out of time to sort it. I hope it's something simple. _________________ Andrew

All tuned up and ready to go. Fuel pressure regulator was miles out apparently, and it had virtually no pressure. _________________ Andrew

It was a great weekend, and the 924 made it home safe and sound.
We took it reasonably carefully on the first stage, as we hadn’t used the new Federal control tyres on the car before, but were still horrified at how little grip they had. They’d lock up at the slightest brake pressure, and effectively doubled the braking distance over the old Dunlops, as well as limiting the cornering speeds. This eliminated the two strengths of the car, and made it horrible to drive. We had so many lockups and slides on Saturday!
The only real mechanical problem we had all weekend was at the end of the touring stage after stage 2, just before service, when a nasty scraping sound came from under the car. Turned out that one of the brake pads had delaminated and fallen off – lucky that it didn’t happen on a special stage!! On further inspection all the others had cracks in them so we swapped them all for new pads, although our spares were only normal road pads which seriously compromised the braking performance for the whole rally.
We were late out of service and ended up starting further up the order in amongst the 4wds, so were under pressure to keep the pace up to get through without holding them up. We went into a corner too hot for the tyres and had a big spin, getting stuck sideways on a very narrow road just around a blind corner. Somehow we managed to get going again before the WRX caught us, but it was a very nervous moment.
Stage 6 we caught up to Bron towards the end of the stage, and presumed she was driving over debris from other cars and flicking it up at us. It wasn’t until we got up beside her that we realised that the bits were falling off her car, as she’d put it into a bank earlier in the stage and smashed up the right front in the process. We checked it over thoroughly at the end of the stage and found it to be only superficial damage, so taped it all up with race tape so she could carry on.
By the last stage of the day we managed to find a pressure setting that gave us more feel from the tyres, and they were only just getting scrubbed in (very hard compound) so it started to be a bit more fun to drive it again.
We finished the day 1 second ahead of the only 944 in the field. The second day went a lot better than the first, and we pulled out a 4 ½ minute lead over the 944 over the 7 stages and started to play with some of the escorts that were dominating our class.
Our best stage placing for the weekend was 4th in class, and we finished 20th out of 30 entrants in the classic field. All in all a good result considering the lack of traction and brakes.
Rotorua in June will suit the car better (should be nice and wet!) and we’ll be aiming a bit higher. Apart from the brakes and tyres the car didn’t miss a beat and the service crew had very little to do compared to all previous rallies, so I’m pretty pleased with it all.
Bron made huge improvements over the event too, and got very difficult to pass by the end. _________________ Andrew

Interesting read, suonds lika fun rally !
What are those tyres? Seems awful, do you have adjustable brake bias? Otherwise that might be a good investment if you plan on doing more rallies on those rubbers _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Yes I do have adjustable bias, and spent a lot of time fiddling with it to compensate for things. The worst thing about the tyres was that the day after we bought them and had them fitted they announced that they'd allow us to use up our old tyres on this rally, so not many other teams were running the Federals! On the plus side we're one rally ahead of the other teams in getting to understand how the Federals work, and can set up the car around this for the next one. It'll also save us having to replace tyres as often, as there's virtually no wear on them because they're so hard!!
Basically there are two options - "drys" and "wets". The reason they went this way is that the full DOT semi slick Federal is great in the dry but a dissaster in the wet (the Dunlops were great in all conditions), so they introduced the idea of using the RS'Rs (high performance road tyres) as the wet option. This means that unless you have a huge budget, the only safe option is to run the wets.
From a safety point of view the thought of getting caught out on the drys if it rains between service stops does not appeal at all. If all teams run them it'll even up the feild a bit, but I've heard rumours that some of the big teams are refusing to run them now, so it'll be interesting to see what happens. _________________ Andrew
