Simple question the rear axle castle nut right hand or left hand? Generally when a thread is left handed it is noted and when it is right it is not. I have chased it, what little protrudes beyond the nut, with my finger nail and am fairly certain it is right. I have already broken a 1/2 drive breaker trying to remove and and now have a 3/4 I borrowed from work that I will use tonight but thought it would be wise to make sure I am turning it hte right direction.

Thanks for the prompt response. I am replacing the rear wheel bearings in hopes of eliminating the funny grindy rubbing noise when making left and right turns. Also going to inspect/clean and repack the CVs. Anything else I should do while I'm at it?

I would highly recommend the use of a percussive tool to loosen the rear axle castle nuts. The porsche tool is of the percussive kind and my facsmilie of it works great. I think it's a 28mm socket from memory.

I used a 3/4" drive breaker bar with a 6-foot piece of fence post on it with my 200lb butt at the very far end.

It worked, but the bar was bending and the crack when it let go was, um, invigorating

I recommend making sure you don't smash your knuckles into the concrete when it lets go, it isn't critical, but I find I work better afterward

Hehe,I applied the aforementioned 3/4 borrowed setup from work last night. The passenger side broke loose with a wild sounding snap followed by me falling to the ground.

The driver side spun free with little to no effort, which may explain the funny rubbing grindy noise. My guess is that the drum was sliding out and the inside rusty edge of the drum was making contact with the brake pad.

The bearings all look nice but I have the bearings and it's apart so I will replace them.

Anybody have any preferred axle grease brands they'd like to recommend for both the CVs and wheel bearings?

It's a little bit of a PITA to select grease, since you need CV-approved grease for that... and most like to run synthetic... yet Mobil1 isn't any good for CV's.

Redline CV1 is excellent, but pricey and hard to come by.

I use Valvoline synthetic - grey in color - fine for CV's and everything else you could possibly want. Been racing with it for 10 years now...
