Hello! My wife is looking for a classic sportscar and she found this car:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330673656834&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123
It's about 120 miles from where I live and I'm thinking of going out and test driving it and see if it checks out OK.
I'm curious if this sounds like a fair price. I know a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it but just wondering if that is the going price for a 77 924.
What sort of things should I look for? I mean other than the obvious such as milky oil intending a blown head gasket. Something that says "Run from it!".
Surface rust is not of any concern. I have painted a couple of cars. The seats need recovering which is usually expensive but allot of times you can find new universal seats on Ebay cheaper than you can have original ones recovered. I've done that before.
I do most of the mechanical work on my own cars so I'm not too concerned about that. I know how to work on L-jet but know nothing about K-jet.
Thanks. |

Seats interchange with 911's and 944's, seat reupholster kits are available as well. (Note the seats in the 924's were vinyl, not leather)
http://garage.ideola.com has some and has some other parts. http://www.pelicanparts.com and http://www.rockauto.com are great parts resources.
77 was only half-galvanized, so be careful when doing body work.
Electrical connections get corroded and things stop working. Clean, tighten and protect the connections and you'll go a long way to having a happy wife.
The Audi 4-speed in the 77 is closely related to the later Audi 5-speed used in the 924, 924S and 944. So the shifter wears out in a similar manner. If the shifter is loose/floppy, fix the shift lever and/or bushings.
Otherwise, standard 924 stuff applies, adjust the rear brakes regularly, etc. Check on http://www.924.org for more info.
Good luck! _________________ Stefan

No. Not worth it. It's an Automatic, and those are getting harder and harder to repair. Save your money and find a 1980-1982 NA. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Whoops, missed that it was an auto. Yeah those aren't worth it, too slow out of the box. _________________ Stefan

Well yeah I know what you mean. I have a Fiat 131 with the Opel autobox and it's a slug. I'm tempted to convert it over to a 5 speed having a parts car.
Trouble is the wife won't learn how to drive a stick shift and is looking for something in an automatic. This is a must have criteria and this particular Porsche meets it.
By the way, what does your username "Fiat22turbo" mean? Are you into Fiats as well? |

Yup, 95hp, 2400lbs (approx) and an auto does not make for a quick getaway. Even with a 125hp mill it won't be much off the line. Adding boost helps quite a bit, that and helping the car go faster through the corners.
Yeah, I had an 80 X-1/9 for a bit that I was swapping a Chrysler 2.2 turbo into. Found the 924 as a project and decided it was a slightly easier project to tackle as the Exxie had rusted through the windshield base and I didn't have welding capabilities at the time. Still have the 1500 mill and some of the body parts for it, I should get serious about sending them on down the road.... But then I see a nicely put together X-1/9 and well....
The 924 has taken 6 years and still isn't on the road, so I'm not sure it was the right choice, but it was a choice and I think the Fiat would be much farther away at this point.
Good luck with the search! _________________ Stefan

X 1/9s are a pain to work on and a bit underpowered. I had one. But was one of the best handling cars I ever owned.
I know some guys in the Portland area that might be interested in your Fiat parts. |

My first car was a Fiat X1/9! Loved that car, even though it was slow and unreliable.
RE: an auto trans, if you're wife is insisting on driving the car and refuses to learn how to drive a manual, I would suggest looking for a 1987 or 88 924S with automatic trans. Those cars had ~150 hp, so while still not fast, will be way better than the 2.0L. You can also find early 944s with auto trans as well, but they're heavier. Or you could really do it up and get a 928 or 968...but those are in a whole different price range. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I was wondering about a Fiat X1/9 with a Suzuki 1300 from the Busa. The X1/9 should be light enough but I wonder what kind of tranny you could use... I don't its just another one of my insain ideas! _________________ 81 924 N/A
