Hello

My name is Steffen and I live in Norway, a cold little country more or less in Europe... So if my English is bad, I hope you could excuse me. For it is not my primary language.

This is my first post, but I have been lurking on this forum for a while.

I own a 924 N/A 1993 model.

Today while driving my heater motor shut down. That is a big problem, because it is freezing here at the moment, and I can expect sub zero conditions and snow constantly until April next year.

I have changed the fan switch in the center console but that did not help. Som Previous Owner have been creative with the electric wiring, but as far as I can tell it looks ok for the heatermotor.

I am thinking that it perhaps could be the relay. But is it any way to check it ?
Is it the one with the 16A fuse on top?
What can I use instead (I have ripped all the relays from a Golf, but noone looks the same )
And where can I buy one online ?

I have seen that it is possible to exchange the heater fan for a early 244 heater.
I have tried to find one here in Norway, but the one i found was to expensive, and from a late model 944. I hope one of you had one for sale, or could tell me where can I get one ?

Best wishes Steffen

Just inn from the snow, with my Haynes manual. The relay I referred to in the previous post seems to be the Horn relay.... I cannot find any ralay for the ventilator.

Then it must be the blower motor.

Is it possible to test it without removing it from the car ?

Australian Summer = sweaty balls.

If your looking for a new heater, someone found a VW alternative

Might want to PM him to see how it turned out.

There are some changes to the heater unit over the years. I'm familiar with the one from a '78.

If you don't have A/C, it should be easy to pop the squirrel cage cover off the blower fan from under the hood. Take a multimeter, and measure to see if you have voltage on the motor terminals.

There should always be some power to the fan with the key on if you have original wiring to the fan. Change the setting of the blower just to be sure.

Likely, there is a problem with the motor. You know there's a problem with the motor if you measure voltage without the motor turning.

Although the motor is tantalizingly close, you can't remove it without cutting things from the top, however some people choose this approach due to how much of a pain it is pulling the dash to get it out the bottom.

I had the same problem recently.
Check for voltage at the fan motor. If you have voltage but the fan wont turn, it is probably gummed up and dirty.
I used some electrical contact cleaner and sprayed everything out. Once the cleaner dried I hit the switch and away it went, as good as new.

Good luck!

Thank you all for good advice.

I removed the birdcage, and checked the voltage on the blower motor. It had none.

Then I followed the wiring and found a relay tucked away under the dashboard, on the driver side. I changed it, and the fan started.

So now I am out driving on the snow again.
