My first car was a 79 Sebring. Bought it in 87 and loved it. Sadly the upkeep was to much for my budget at the time so I sold her in 88.
Recently I've been thinking about my old car and (in what is probably some sort of mid-life crisis) have been casually looking for a 924S. I know they didn't make a lot of these cars but I'm surprised just how thin the market actually is. Not much out there and what there is seems neglected or abused.
Ideally I'd like to find an 88. Has to be Guards Red and a 5sp. I don't have the time or know how to work on it myself so a project car is out of the question. Lower miles and a stack of maintenance records is what I'm looking for. Does this car exist or am I wasting my time? Been looking on autotrader, cars.com, eBay, pelican parts board. Should I be looking somewhere else?

Welcome. Nothing wrong with a little mid-life crisis to shake things up a bit and as long as an 87 is also an option you'll find tons of red 5 speeds for sale.
Be sure to post pics when you get her. _________________ 1981 931 CGT replica, OEM CGT intercooler, .8 BAR WG spring, GTS Headlights, Innovative Wide band A/F, A/C delete, 16" Fuchs, Weltmeister 200lb lowering springs, Bilstein HDs front, Koni Sport rears. |

Took me more than a year. But most of my waiting was for some long-awaited cash to make the purchase. I, too, wanted a red one and did eventually find one.

I found mine while looking for a project car to replace my Merkur XR4Ti. It had title issues and I ended up selling it as a parts car for a $750 loss. I found another one, but I really wanted a 944 so I haven't done anything with it. I got my 944 in exchange for some work on my friend's house and am looking to sell the 924.
So I guess the short answer is no time at all for the first one and 2 weeks for the second. _________________ 1980 924 (for sale)

It took me about 6 months of looking for a red 944 that wasn't crap or auto, or overpriced (which was surprisingly hard to find) before I found my 931 nearby. I believe I made the right choice. _________________ 1982 931- Stock with MBC at 8psi

I wasnt really looking for any particular car, though at the back of my mind i yearned for an affordable sportscar. This was especially so as i had to sell my 914 four years prior to seeing an ad for a 1979 924. Having owned the 914 for 3 years, i rightaway saw the practicality of the 924 for everyday transportation and for sheer fun! I checked it out and bought it the same week. _________________ 1979 924 U.S. version

I'm in the "It found me" category. But I have (had) always wanted one so I always have (had) one eye on the classifieds.
Although it did take many months of waiting after I first went to look at it for the seller to realise it wasn't worth anywhere near the initial price he was asking and settle for a more realistic price... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

| About a year, but I was looking for anything but black or red, which was tough. You'll find tons of nice 924s in red. |

All of mine have been a matter of opportunity and bad timing money wise. It never fails that a nice car comes along when funds are at their lowest. I happened upon my latest purchase after I initially purchased it for a friend. A year later and a rebuilt engine invested into it I find myself with a perfect running, handling, looking 924-s
I have considered selling it but I fall back in love with it with every mile it clicks. The 931 is just as much fun but they drive so very differently.
Much luck with your search.
It'll happen

Mine found me, or rather us. I have been working with a friend in his shop and he had it out back. Was his daily driver for may years when his kids were young. I pulled it out if the shop to reorganize and started to admire it. Worked off the price of the car and began working on it in spare time. Now it will be my sons first car next June...or when Im ready to find another. Need to finish a TR6 first.

Thanks to all who have replied; great stories.
After looking at the 924S production numbers and realizing that just 9,000 or so were imported to the U.S., only about 2,000 in 88, I have a better understanding just how rare these cars are.
For those who have driven both 87s and 88s does the additional HP of an 88 make a noticeable difference in performance/driving experience? |
