|
|
After several months of not succecsfully trying to modify the lower control arm so that I could use a 951 sway bar with drop links on a 924(a much better design than the 944/Audi method) I gave up and fitted some 944 front control arms and built a build a bracket to mount it to the front subframe. Control arms come from Pelican/Paragon/Lindsey at about $25 each, control arm bushings the same suppliers at a couple of dollars each. I got the bushing brackets PN 944-343-735 and 736 as well as the drop links PN 944-343-733 from Sunset Porsche. I built plates from 3/8" x2 mild steel that I could bolt to the existing holes in the frame and have attached(I hope) a picture of the drawing. I sectioned 3/8" out of the drop links and welded them back together with some additional reinforcing as my welding is just marginally better than adequate. If you decide to build your own drop links, some 1/8" x1-1/2" steel would work, but add something to increase its strength and stiffness as the stock ones have a channel pressed into them and the steel is somewhat better than mild steel. An angle brace like Lindsay supplies for racing would work quite well also. All bolts are 8x1.25mm, I used 30mm to bolt the bracket to the car, 15-20mm with extra washers to bolt the drop link to the bracket and and 25mm for the bushing brackets to the control arm

If anyone can convert an Autocad .dwg file to a .pdf I'd be happy to send it to them. so that a good drawing could be published.
The bushings and brackets have to be fitted to the sway bar before installation on the car and the trick to getting the assembly to fit as someone on the board helped me out is to get the front suspension carrying the full load of the car. I did this by putting jackstands under the front ball joints
Another way to do this if you are a good welder(I doubt I'll ever get that good) is to just weld the drop link to the car subframe. Vince Ponz for one did it this way. [/img] _________________ Mike

When I did mine, I also made a steel bracket that I attached from swaybar to the little square patch of the frame on both side. Adds strength. The pressure of the swaybar started to pull the steel from my subframe after a few months, and this corrected that. _________________ 1980 924 NA

How did you do it? If this could be developed further all the better. I could make new bottom plates that would extend to the inside of the subframe, then weld a vertical plate that could be bolted thru the subframe which has a couple of 1/8" patch plates welded to it, the subframe steel is probably not thick enough to have much strength unless the bolt was rather large. If the down link bracket has to move in 1/4" or so it won't make any difference in performance. _________________ Mike

Don't rush for me, we are heading to Mexico for the winter next week. This car is just sort of a continuing project for me. I really like the wheels I got from you. A local guy blew up his 944, probably timing belt and decided to put the body on top of a 4x4 truck chassis-oh well. I am slowing trying to get all the running gear. _________________ Mike

Mike, Did you find a way to mount the 951 sway bar on? I'm in that situation and I have a few ideas how to do it, just seeing if others figure a way to mount one.

Mine is currently just bolted on with the plates I drew up. That is probably not good enough for the long run. In the spring a friend who is an excellent welder is going to stop by and use my small MIG to weld the plate to the frame tube. It should only take a couple of spots to stop the twisting and bending a as those same bolts hold it on the 944 just a slightly different location. Vince P just welded his brackets on the frame.
Me overhead mig weld? I don't think so. I'm not bad with an arc welder, but the mig has beeen a difficult transition. _________________ Mike
