Hi Guys,

I'm moving from down under to San Francisco in about 6 weeks so i have two questions:

1: Who wants a beer when I get there!

2: I need a car. <- that's not a question

So! My first instinct was to start looking up 924s (of course, we all have the bug) but I think I'll need something a bit more reliable as I'll be commuting from the city to Marin County every day (2x 45minute drives). So I started to think maybe I should do as the romans and drive an American muscle car. In any case I'll have less than $10k to spend (but cash) and I'm looking for something coupe 2+2, tough and classic. It can be old and need work that's how I like them but I need to be able to start driving it ASAP so must pass smog and be currently registered and all that.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome. Not buying a Porsche? Sounds like treason! I don't think I could get a reliable 944 for under $10k right?

I have built a secret cave for the V8 924 to hybernate in with the intention of shipping it over to run at Sonoma in about a year depending on how things go.

My old man will "look after" the 911... which means he'll drive it till it breaks.

You lucky bugger! How'd you get into The 'States? They only let me visit from time to time. I'm not allowed to stay

The only address you'll ever need... craigslist.

Here's a Boxster for ten-five. You could talk'im down...

Or, if you just have to have a Yank Tank... Careful, though. She'll chew through that dollar-a-litre gas plenty quick!

Yea they have a thing called the E-3 Visa which is similar to the H1B but specifically for Aussies which is pretty neat.

Ok I'll check out craigslist for everything, I thought the listings on ebay looked a bit anaemic Not really into boxsters - there was a 944 with a cage in the parking lot when I went for the job interview which is good sign.

I would suggest an e46 BMW 3-series.

Would you consider a 928? You might be able to find a decent example with air for around $10K. Although reliability might be an issue Seriously, though, if you really would prefer a Porsche over some non-descript sedan or over-exposed Mustang, the 928 would be even better (IMO) than a 944. They're not as common, they're more refined, more powerful, and helluva lot of fun...although a completely different character than the 944.

Some 928s:

For $10K, you should have no trouble finding a good 944, or even a 951...and have $$$ left over!

928s... Are... Amazing...

Unfortunately it is time for me to begin searching for a new 928.

Here is a good tip. Find one where the owner knows what he is talking about when it comes to the maintenance... If it has no maintenance records, walk away. 928s' are mechanically bulletproof if maintained right. You could end up putting in an easy few thousand dollars from the get-go if you do not get the car inspected... Things the owner didn't even know was wrong.

Bonus if the car has it's maintenance records. I personally keep every single receipt for every part I buy for my cars, down to the smallest bolt, because this is going to be amazing reference for the next owner.

928s' I must say tend to do better the higher their mileage is, but hate to sit! You can hit up to 200,000 miles before it starts breaking in.

A 928 is pretty tempting but the maintenance is a big issue as I will be living in the city without a workshop at least for the first 6 months. They are just that bit more complicated than the 4 cylinder cars.

I'm steering back towards a nice 944 with a service history - they actually get good gas mileage and should have no problem passing smog which are two big problems with the muscle car route.

My 911 actually has an update kit on it, looks more like a late 80s carerra with a whale tale. The update was done by Porsche in steel so its nice. And yea 924Aussie I'll let you know because its very much loved now but when something goes wrong the favour changes very quickly.

Smart931 is selling his nice white 931, has a few issues, but a very nice car. He's in that area. We're thinking of a late '80s mercedes diesel for our next car. Need the four doors for our dogs, and they're pretty cheap to buy.

surely you'd be getting a charger? or wouldn't consider stretching the budget as this thing would double it's value if you brought it back!
