Its weird.. we`ve got plenty of crank, fuel, spark, and the timing is right.
Its not even coughing...I`m not sure when it last ran to be honest, I bought it knowing it hadnt been started in awhile.
Any idea`s? its a 1977, new coil, distributor cap and leads, no obvious signs of internal damage or a blown head gasket etc.
Ive drained out the old fuel that was sitting in the tank and will try it with some fresh juice tomorrow. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

Done a compression check?
Valve timing?
How did you check ign timing if the motor is not running? _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Possibly gummed-up fuel system if it hasn't been run in a long time. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Buy some Flash -Lube injector cleaner.
(Supercheap Auto)
For heavily gummed up fuel systems use 4x the normal dose.
Cleaned up an outboard two stroke fuel system I was working on which hadnt been touched for 6 years. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

All the timing marks are in the right position, we`ve checked and double checked.
Ive drained the fuel system and added fresh fuel, mind you, it was not a good sign that the fuel cap was rusted shut.....
Checked the injectors and they arent gummed up. It tried to fire once then nothing again.
Mind you, the spark from the plugs isnt very consistant at all. Will put some new plugs and a fuel filter on it tomorrow night before we start pulling bits off it. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

How did you check the spark ?
From memory and I hope to be corrected if I am wrong, but on a EFI system you shouldnt earth the spark plug against the block for example to check spark but use a spark tester instead to check the actual lead.
On a carb system you put it near a good earth to watch the spark jump but on a EFI system the plug has to be earthed thats why you use an old plug and enlarge the gap or use a gap tester, approx $20 for standard to $50 for an adjustable gap tester.

Hey Alan, my mechanic mate has been helping. We did earth the plug against the body to check it, it was intermittant, one minute a nice spark, then weak... 2 of the plugs we`re pretty black.
We`ve checked the valve timing, pulled the injectors and made sure they were spraying fuel, replaced the fuel etc.
Like I say, it kicked once and then nothing again. I`m going to pick up some new plugs tomorrow and a fuel filter, just to eliminate the basics. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

What about the cap and the rotor , any signs of tracking, also check it is the right rotor as they are not cheap out here and the previous owner may have just gone down to supercheap and purchased one that looked like the old one.
My NGK Iridiumix plugs were about $7 each BPR7EIX 1198
The ones I use for testing NGK BP7ES 2412 are a lot cheaper
Correct Fuel filter from Porsche $112.90 delivered a couple of days ago PO-93011007600 always in stock

Yeah the distributor looked fine, ran the test light on it, the cap is new but Im wondering about the rotor now... I`ll order one tomorrow.
It had BP7ES plugs in it.. those plugs are cheap compared to the Kart ones we used to churn through!! _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

I have no problems buying any parts from porsche in Brisbane and if they dont have them they get them from Melbourne which is closer to you.
What I want is decent an engine test stand with all the guages already fitted

I normally go to Bob Whyms for the 928 parts, they are pretty reasonable and I normally get the bits next day. Havent really priced any 924 parts from them but I will give them a call tomorrow.
The Porsche dealer in tassie is not reknown for its, um, value for money... _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

I looked at a few suppliers and located a bosch fuel filter 71021 at www.autohausaz.com/index.HTML
It already comes with adaptors and for the price I bought 2. ($10 ea)
They fit and work fine
Porsche Brisbane are great for some things but others are astronomical.
($550 each for disc rotors for an NA) _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Have you done the checks on both the aux air valve and Cold start valve,
these are pretty important to get the car firing up from the start,
The CSV only runs for about 8 seconds when cranking but can still foul up your plugs pretty good if it doesn't start in that time. Black powder on them is a classic sign...
Also can you confirm how you aligned the timing marks and what timing degress you are using?, many people report the cam pulley being put on backwards which stuffs everything by 180deg.
Not saying you've done this wrong, but just to eliminate it as a potential problem.
Does the car have any type of immobiliser/alarm ?
Lastly have you changed all the vaccum lines?, these cars are notorious for vac leaks and this will destroy the air/fuel mix and cause poor starting.
Cheers
