This was the fourth go. The emissions testing guy recognised me... I passed by leaning it off to about halfway between where it was last time and stumbling - a shade more than an 8th of a turn. The NOx and THC passed easily but the CO just scraped in. I could back it off a whisker more, I guess.

Next task: door exchange. That means painting them and fixing the chips in the bonnet. And that's going to cost money.

Also have to ascertain if it has a collapsible steering column.

Wade.

Hi Wade

The 924 has got a collapsible column.

After the mount behind the ign. switch there is a section that is collapsible.

Hope that helps.

Shane.

Even a British import?

I've had a couple of friends look, including a long-time mechanic (on a different marque, of course), but no-one who definitely knows what to look for.

Congrats on the pass Wade.

AFAIK the steering shaft is the same on all M/Y, however consult the PET. There is an expanded metal section that is collapsible and integral with the steering wheel boss. The steering shaft itself is solid at the wheel (splined) end. It then enters a larger OD tube, retained with what I recall is a small diameter pin, say around 1/16". Hopefully someone with a dismantled car can verify this. Presume the pin is designed to sheer from a heavy impact.

Yeah, that makes sense. I had a look at the PET and I think the diagram agrees with what I can see. I remember the tube, in the PET it basically hides the collapsing the section.

I imagine the automotive engineer may want to pull the steering boss apart to verify. I think I'll make sure I have my laptop with the PET loaded for him to look at!

Congrats on the pass Wade.

Collapsible steering columns have been mandatory on Australian registered cars since 1973 (ADR10B-1973). I assume your car has been registered in Australia previously.

The collapsing part is the column is the hollow honeycomb style section just above the brake pedal. Also the steering shaft has offsets in it to stop the steering shaft from being driven into the driver.

Also be aware with the doors, the latches changed completely for the 1980 model year. I found that out the hard way 1978 project car with 1980 donor car!

Cheers

The car has been registered in Au before, in SA and (I think) Qld. But it was a private import from (probably) the UK. And I know SA don't care about ADR compliance for an '82 car. But NSW does.

There isn't a honey-comb section just above the brake pedal, IIRC, but I haven't looked for a while and might have been looking in the wrong place. If it is truly absent, I will be talking to a steering specialist for a suitable column.

The door swapover is going to involve swapping all the trim, including the locks and windows. I'm pretty sure this is not difficult.

And thanks everyone about the emissions result! Just took a new cat and careful mixture adjustment. I was getting afraid I'd have to put a lambda system on it.

New Cat???

What year is your car? Cat's only required from Jan 1986 when unleaded was made mandatory.

I will take a pic of the steering column later on.

Oh, I should have a spare column as well.

Wade

If you don't have a collapsable let me and others know I am sure we can find one between us. I will see if I still have a spare. You can have it if I still have it.

It will be cheaper and it will bolt in.

Failing that borrow the one out of my car for the Blue slip and put yours back in after.

I did Pink slips for years and it is not apart of the check for yearly rego( as long as there was no play in it!).

Thanks guys!

I got a cat put on because otherwise I couldn't get the CO below 18.6 g/km and the NOx below the standard, too. With a cat, it was possible, and I can't feel any difference to the power. I did my homework, though, and went to a highly regard muffler place recommended by a racing friend.

Shane, that pic is gold. And I'm pretty sure my column lacks such a piece. Damn. If someone has a spare, I'll definitely snap it up! But I have to check.

Being a private import, the car doesn't have a compliance plate. So I need an engineer's certificate in lieu of that. Then I can get a blue slip. I'm basically paying for states other than NSW being so lax with automotive standards years ago.

OK,

These cars are full of surprises!!
The porsche boys had a huge VW / Audi parts catalogue to select from.

Both of these are collapsible.

This is from my 1978

This is from my 1980

I've never seen the second one before.

Your right they had so many parts to choose from.

I had an 80-82 (don't remember exact year) and it had the other style too.

I guess it was luck of the draw as to which got put in!

Pretty sure I have a couple of spares of the collapsible style if you can't find one locally.
