My 87's catalytic converter broke off (again) at the front so I need a new cat. The local shop quoted me $300 for a no name universal. Any better suggestions? This is my daily driver for the moment and I don't have a ton to invest but would like to get the best option for the money.

Thanks for any advice.

stevekat, thanks for the link. I am considering a used one, but was hoping someone might have some recommendations on good new ones? The car is completely stock at this point so I figured if I'm going to have to replace it I might want to upgrade.

Thanks

If you have no emissions issues, and your old one is just falling apart, might consider the factory part. I don't know what they look like on the 924s, but on the 931, I had considered having mine opened up and the contents removed, if your car would pass emissions today, without an active cat, or for use on the track rather than a bypass pipe that might have to be swapped out every year or two to go through smog. And then weld back up, if you know a good stainless welder.

I am going to try a generic magnaflow cat next week. We'll see how it works.

FWIW, it's illegal to sell used catalytic converters...
