What does the KP/cm2 dial indicate? Sometimes the needle points low, like 2 or 4, and sometimes it reads high, like 6 or 8. So, what is that? What is it trying to tell me?

Yeah, but that doesn't really tell me what it's trying to tell me about the operating of my engine. More info, please.

Okay, it seems that it has something to do with oil pressure. I thought maybe it might be vacuum pressure, but I suppose not. So, if it is oil pressure, then what numbers the needle is pointing at seem to have something to do with the rpms the engine is running at. Is that right? And if so, what does 2 mean compared to, say, 8, and what would be a reading I would in general be happy to see?

I hear VDO is a good instrument maker. What do you think?

Sure enough, it's an oil pressure gauge.

I found that pic at Ideola's garage. Apparently he sells them.

Now I need to learn more about what it's reading indicate.

Hmm. Does this apply to my '79 924n/a? 2 bar at normal idle, 5 or 6 when giving it the gas. Rule of thumb 1 bar per 1000 rpm. That seems a bit off to me, but it does give me an idea of what I'm looking at there.

Well, it seems I answered my own question, but if any of you smart guy mechanic engineers have anything more to say about oil pressure and what a driver ought to be looking for/expecting, then please speak up.

For quite a while, I thought it might have something to do with vacuum pressure. Is there a vacuum pressure monitor indicator gauge? Stock or after market? Useful or BS? Clearly i don't know what I'm talking about!

Seems some of you folks like the idea of replacing the clock with a vacuum gauge.

Monitoring it may give you advance warning of inpending problems.

Hey, look at this!

Looks like Summit Racing will sell you a VDO-made vacuum gauge. At least it would matchy match the other instruments.

And that is how I spent an hour of my time this warm Thursday evening. Asking dumb questions and answering them myself.

You were on a roll, so I didn't want to interrupt

Yeah, VDO makes different gauges and a vacuum gauge is pretty handy to have instead of a clock.

Another option is to install an oil temperature gauge, but that requires adding a sender in the oil pan.

Hey! It was fun, actually!

As far as putting in the oil temp gauge, I read that that adding a sender is easy. There's a hole, currently containing a bolt, I think, not far above the drain plug. Just take the bolt out and insert an appropriately-sized sender unit in that hole, right? On the face of it, it seems a little easier than installing a vacuum sensor, if only because I don't know where/how to connect such a device. But then, I'd wager that I would get decent instructions from the instrument maker.
