So what I feel like the worst thing ever to happen to my 924 has happened. The starter went out, Something ever so highly frustrating as I love, absolutely love to drive this car. So I sat down with my Haynes manual and searched, and I found the long and rather complicated list of directions. There has got to be an easier way to this. And you guys truly are the experts so I'm looking for any hints or just easier ways to do a swap!
Thanks so much! _________________ Porsche 924 |

Starter Switch? Starter Solenoid? Of course, be sure to check your relay as well. The Starter is a little time consuming to replace, but it will be worth it if it get's your car going again, right?
It's always something new going wrong with the 924, which I guess is why us guys here tend to work on them, so we can continue to drive this fun ride. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924- Snailshell

Yep, isn't bad.
The trickiest bit is the getting the heat shields and wiring off. Go slow and make note of what came off and in what order so you can put it all back together again.
To make it easier, I would pull the oil filter (change the oil afterward while you're in there) and disconnect the battery, then remove the alternator and then the starter.
You don't actually have to pull the alternator, but without it, you'll have a little more room to see what you're working with and more importantly, you'll be able to remove the wiring harness that the alternator and starter share and replace them (they routinely fail and are a bit undersized anyway)
There is a slightly smaller one available from a later Audi (5000 with the 2.2, I believe) that is lighter and easier to install. I think there was a thread about it here.
Also, Ideola sells even lighter, stronger gear reduction starters.
Good luck, _________________ Stefan

+1 on replacing the wiring harness. This is not a pleasant job (not the worst, but it's pain on the NA), so best to build a new harness while you're servicing the starter. IIRC, the stock harness has a squarish plug so that you can fish out just the wiring for the starter and alternator. Take some pix before disconnecting anything so you know what's what. Lay the harness out on the ground, take some measurements, and go get some high quality, heavier gauge wires and terminals. Solder the connections and shrink wrap over the solder joints. It sounds like a lot of work, but trust me, it's worth it, and you won't regret doing it...one less thing to go wrong, right!? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
