I came back yesterday after checking out the parts car. Had a blast and the Porsche ran great!!.
Anyway I got home and heard a POP! as I pulled it into the garage. I did a quick walk around and everything looked good. I thought it a bit odd that the engine lid was up in the drivers corner, so I gave it a push and it clicked down as it should. I pulled the car out today to bring it to work and the engine lid was open again. I looked by the release and the release cable was now inside the sheething!!!!
I looked at replacing this before, but unlike 911's and 914's the locking mech is riveted into the front of the car. So how do you replace this? I have googled, youtubed etc but not found too much here. Do you need to remove the rivets and then redo the rivets???
As always any help is much appreciated. _________________ Cheers;

The problem is probably your cable, not the locking mechanism. You can replace just the cable without having to remove the locking mechanism. I have a couple of spares in my parts bin, but I'm not 100% certain they will work for you because there are so many unique things about the early cars, you can never tell for sure.
In any event, if the locking mechanism needs to be removed, it's quite easy to drill out the rivets. Just take care not to damage or enlarge the mounting holes. Then you can use some small bolts (maybe M4 or M6) with nylock nuts to reattach the new one. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Thanks Ideola;
So I have a cable that is stuffed into the casing, but it is inside and not able to be seen from inside the car. I have the engine lid open, but not sure how to push the wire back from the front of the car into the cabin so that I can then at least keep the hood down and not run on the emergency latch. I was hoping there were some video, pictures of how this connects. I have pretty much gone through Corse's thread, as well as all through google and youtube.
Any picture guides would be great. Thanks _________________ Cheers;

The cable is stuffed into which end? At the latch or at the pull in the cabin? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I would be very careful about getting a bad cable to work. If you get the hood down and it won't open you are in for unhappy times.
I can send you a new one for $40 + actual shipping. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Well at the latch end. It was out through the cabin until yesterday. But the handle wasn't connected as it was not a proper OEM unit. So I didn't get a pair of vice-grips on it quick enough before it got "sucked" into the tube.
I would take a pic but i am at work. I will take a pic or two when I get home to give a proper indication of what I am dealing with.

Well no pictures to show of how the cable has tucked itself back into the sheething because I was able to get the cable out. When I looked in the engine compartment and followed the cable from the release to the interior, I found that it had wrapped itself around the steering column!! . Glad this happened when I got home, but now I need to get a new engine lid release cable and fast as Watkins Glen is coming up fast.
Thanks for the input everyone who gave it. _________________ Cheers;

Hey Ideola;
How fast could it get here? LOL.
time is of the essence on this, and hopefully I route it properly.
Here are my thoughts on proper routing of the cable.
1. Take it from the screw where it connects at the front of the car towards the drivers front fender and under the headlight.
2. From there it goes past the air cleaner and follows the inner fender well
3. Through the firewall and connect it on the left side of the drivers compartment under a bit forward of the fuse panel but lower.
Thoughts / comments?

thank you Claude and Ideola.
I picked up the new hood release cable and installed it last night. I am a bit worried now (I should have more faith in my own skills), anyway, I need to adjust the cable a bit. After the initial installation and test I pulled the cable back into the casing. I was able to pull the cable back out but it is a bit frayed now. Argh!!! Talk about a PITA. I then put the cable back in and tested without having the engine lid closed. It looked like it worked but the handle did not go all the way back. The cable itself is very, and I mean very stiff to pull with the handle. That is what really makes me nervous as I do not want to break this.
When I get home from work I think I will loosen the adjusting screw, pull the cable a bit more and then see what happens.
If it does not open (pray to the Porsche gods it does) how do I get the engine lid open?
Thanks again and Cheers; _________________ Cheers;
