Hope you dont plan on tracking the car with those calipers.
The temp will destroy that coating..... _________________ 3 928s, |

How so? I've tracked my powder coated calipers and never had any issues and the rotors themselves are zinc coated which get much much hotter than the brackets.
Back to Rasta: Did you send them out to be done, or get a kit to do them yourself? I've been thinking about the Caswell kit since I had luck with some of their other kits... _________________ '80 924 Turbo - SOLD!

What would be the approximate weight of that bag of bolts, Rasta?
I need a weight figure to do inquiries at some zinc services nearby.

Too cheap (and toxic) to do them yourself. . .$45 for a 5 gallon bucket. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Lizard may have a point here. It looks like a passivated zinc chromate finish. As a general rule these start to degrade at around 125Celsius.
OEM finishes on mechanical parts are usually only designed to prevent corrosion during the showroom phase of a car's life.
Obviously, the corrosion prevention performance of an individual part will depend on thickness, chemical make-up, service conditions of the part... in question. Check out any OE calipers on most vehicles after about 24months and they don't look good.
Will be interesting to see how these last. _________________ 1981 931 series2 Euro spec |

Looks great!
Keep us updated on how the finish holds up!

Powdercoat has a much higher temp resistance than this Zinc coating.
As well for most from the factory, do you think that they were tracked? No.
For street use, I doubt that it will be a problem. However I also cannot confirm as to the treatment that the calipers got from the factory. But I am pretty sure that they were painted with a high temp paint. Nothing more.
Personally, I would consider a ceramic coating on all the caliper parts to help try to prevent heat transfer. _________________ 3 928s, |

I have been using ceramic bake on spray paint on my calipers. You just stick it in the oven for an hour after the paint dries and it becomes chemical and heat resistant. _________________ 87 924s

Or, not.
FWIW, it is plating. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I've been thinking about picking up the Eastwood plating kit to do this myself at home. Are there certain metal bits that you should not plate? I remember in another thread that plating can change the way a bold torques. This would give me pause in plating anything critical that I would have to torque.
In addition I have a vibratory tumbler that cleans and polishes stuff up to 10 inches long. I'm thinking I should be able to do that and plate them right after. _________________ 1977 924 N/A Martini Edition |
